Dystopian stories are incredibly popular in movies. Films like Divergent, The Hunger Games, and The Maze Runner all started as dystopian novels and became major movie franchises. The Hunger Games has been especially successful, with new installments still being released after 14 years. Now, Warner Bros. is hoping to find similar success with a recently acquired 11-book young adult series.
Warner Bros. has purchased the rights to adapt Tahereh Mafi’s popular young adult dystopian book series, Shatter Me, according to Variety. The series began with the novel Shatter Me in 2011 and has recently gained significant traction on BookTok. It consists of six novels and five shorter stories, and centers on Juliette Ferrars, a teen with a deadly touch who rebels against a controlling and oppressive government called The Reestablishment.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated fans over the past fifteen years, and I’m thrilled to finally bring the world and characters of Shatter Me to the screen in a way that respects their passion for the books,” said Mafi. “Warner Bros. has been a wonderful collaborator, and I’m eager to create a truly memorable movie that takes the series to the next level.”
Shatter Me Has Enough Material to Build a Major Franchise for Warner Bros.

If the upcoming Shatter Me movie is successful, it has the potential to launch a large and lasting franchise for Warner Bros., extending far beyond the original book series. The story world has already expanded with new books like Watch Me, which kicks off the Shatter Me: The New Republic spin-off series set ten years after the main storyline concludes. Following Watch Me came Release Me in April, and another installment, Escape Me, is scheduled for release in September. With so much source material available, fans could be enjoying stories from the world of Shatter Me for many years to come.
Beyond just having a lot of material to work with, Shatter Me has the strong foundation needed for a successful adaptation – a detailed and immersive world. The original series and its spinoffs have given author Tahereh Mafi plenty of room to develop her characters and setting naturally. While the plot differs from The Hunger Games, both franchises feature impressive worldbuilding. And dystopian fiction is popular again! We’re seeing this with the continuation of The Hunger Games in both books (like last spring’s Sunrise on the Reaping) and movies, as well as the return of Divergent. Author Veronica Roth will revisit her Divergent universe with a new novel, The Sixth Faction, offering an alternate take on the story.
