The new film, The Ribbon Hero, is taking inspiration from Princess Knight rather than being a direct remake. Currently, only a key visual and the production staff have been announced, but more details are expected in a few months. An official website has launched to keep fans updated as anticipation builds for the premiere. The anime is being produced by Twin Engine, the studio behind this year’s hit Netflix film, Cosmic Princess Kaguya, which was also a box office success in Japan. Cosmic Princess Kaguya was praised for its beautiful animation and engaging story, and fans can expect a similar quality in The Ribbon Hero.
The manga Princess Knight ran from 1962 to 1966 and is set in a classic medieval fairytale world. It tells the story of Sapphire, a princess who must disguise herself as a male prince to claim her rightful place on the throne. Because only men are allowed to rule, she has to keep her true identity a secret from everyone. This deception began at birth, when her father publicly announced she was a boy instead of a girl.
Sapphire faces a difficult task: she must pretend to be someone she isn’t to prevent a cruel man, Duke Duralumon, from becoming king. Her father, the current king, is taking drastic steps because Duralumon would likely cause great harm to the people if he ever took the throne.
