Travis Kelce Weighs in on Patrick Mahomes’ NFL Season After ACL Tear

Patrick Mahomes is the chief of hard work.

After suffering significant knee injuries – a torn ACL and LCL – in his left leg during an NFL game five months ago, which ended his 2025-2026 season, teammate Travis Kelce has playfully hinted at whether Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be ready to play by the start of the new season in September.

“He’s working incredibly hard,” the tight end—who is getting ready to marry Taylor Swift—said on the May 20th episode of his New Heights podcast. “I really know that.”

Travis’s podcast partner, Jason Kelce, said his brother didn’t give a clear answer about whether Patrick Mahomes will play again, calling it a typical, careful response from a company spokesperson.

No one associated with the Kansas City Chiefs has confirmed whether the three-time Super Bowl winner – who shares three children, Sterling (5), Bronze (3), and Golden (16 months), with his wife Brittany Mahomes – will be playing football again in four months. However, a recent video of him golfing has given fans hope.

Plus, the team’s general manager Brett Veach has spoken positively about Patrick’s recovery.

I’m not a medical professional, but it’s been incredible to watch how dedicated Patrick Mahomes has been to his recovery,” he said on The Pat McAfee Show on May 1. “He’s here from 7 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m. every day. And even when he travels to Texas, he brings one of our assistant trainers with him.”

Brett also pointed out that Patrick’s hard work is inspiring and suggests he’s recovering faster than expected.

However, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid cautioned fans to not read too far into any updates.

He responded on The Rich Eisen Show on May 15th to comments about a player being ‘ahead of schedule,’ questioning who even sets those expectations. He emphasized that everyone progresses at their own pace, but noted this particular player has been working incredibly hard and is improving daily, without facing any significant setbacks.

But in the end, Andy said, “It’s a day-to-day thing.”

He said it’s possible you might be able to see him play in the first game if he continues to improve, but they’ll evaluate the situation as it unfolds.
