Tubi Adds Jim Carrey’s Cult Classic Fantasy Adaptation That Was Meant To Be a Franchise Launcher

Jim Carrey’s fantasy movie from the mid-2000s, which aimed to be the first in a big franchise like Harry Potter, is now available to stream for free on Tubi. Tubi already has a large collection of fantasy films, including ’80s favorites like Labyrinth and The Neverending Story, as well as newer movies like Poor Things. Now, they’ve added a film that was supposed to kick off a successful series, but unfortunately never got a sequel.

The 2004 movie Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is now available on Tubi. While intended to launch a film series based on all 13 books by Daniel Handler, the movie didn’t make enough money to justify sequels. Despite earning $210 million worldwide, its $150 million production cost meant plans for further films were cancelled. The movie combines the plots of the first three books – The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, and The Wide Window – and stars Jim Carrey as the villainous Count Olaf. Olaf is a scheming actor who tries to steal the Baudelaire children’s inheritance. After Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire lose their parents in a mysterious fire, they are placed in Olaf’s care and must constantly outsmart his dangerous plans.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events Remains a Cult Favorite

Despite not becoming a major blockbuster series, the movie Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events has become a beloved classic for many. It earned positive reviews (72% from critics and 63% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes) by offering something different from typical family films – a darkly funny and satirical story. The film wasn’t afraid to be gloomy and embrace a gothic style, perfectly capturing the books’ miserable, surreal world. It balanced dark humor with intriguing mysteries, making it enjoyable for both children and adults.

Although fans of the 2004 movies didn’t get to see Daniel Handler’s complete vision for the Lemony Snicket series, they eventually returned to the world of his books with the 2017 Netflix adaptation, A Series of Unfortunate Events. This version starred Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf and was much more successful than the earlier film, largely because it stayed true to the books. The show ran for three seasons, totaling 25 episodes, and concluded in 2019 with incredibly positive reviews, averaging a 96% score from critics.
