When Nintendo released the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, it marked their arrival into the world of 16-bit gaming and offered a huge collection of games – over 1,700 in total! While many were fantastic, not every title was a hit. Some were just average, and others were truly terrible. We’ve looked back at reviews from when the games first came out, how difficult they were to play, and how much players disliked them to pick out five of the very worst SNES games.
1) Terminator 2: Judgment Day

When Terminator 2: Judgment Day exploded onto the scene in 1991 as a massive summer hit, it naturally spawned a wave of video games. While some Terminator games are actually quite good, the version released for the Super Nintendo was notoriously bad. Published by the infamous LJN, it was a clear sign of a low-quality product. The side-scrolling game suffered from frustrating collision issues, uninspired character designs, dull backgrounds, and simply wasn’t enjoyable to play. It was a poor game that likely only sold because of the movie’s popularity, and anyone who bought it quickly regretted their purchase.
2) Captain Novolin

I usually don’t feature educational games on lists like this, but Captain Novolin is so strangely awful that it deserves a mention. This SNES game stars a hero who has type 1 diabetes, and he’s on a mission to rescue the mayor from a villain named Blubberman. Interestingly, the game was funded by Novo Nordisk, a company that makes insulin. While the idea behind the game was good – and it was generously given to hospitals and children with diabetes – the actual game itself was poorly made. It wasn’t fun to play and didn’t really teach you anything beyond the fact that it was about diabetes.
3) Pit Fighter

Released in 1990, Pit Fighter was an arcade fighting game by Atari that famously used real actors filmed with bluescreens to create its characters – a technique that Mortal Kombat would later refine. While the arcade version looked impressive for its time, the game’s 1992 port to the Super Nintendo by Tengen was poorly received. Pit Fighter received a lot of pre-release hype, but the SNES version couldn’t handle the game’s demands, resulting in clunky controls and visuals that were a far cry from the original arcade experience, making it very difficult to play.
4) Space Ace

When LaserDisc games first appeared in arcades, they were a huge hit, and Space Ace quickly became a favorite. It played much like Dragon’s Lair and its sequel, but instead of a fantasy setting, Space Ace took place in space with a science fiction theme. In 1994, Absolute Entertainment tried to bring Space Ace to the SNES, but the port didn’t quite capture the magic of the original. Without the smooth, full-motion video, and replaced with only a few blurry cutscenes, the SNES version felt like a completely different game. What remained was a visually unappealing side-scroller with unreliable controls and gameplay that relied heavily on guesswork.
5) Bebe’s Kids

Released in 1992, the animated film Bebe’s Kids spawned a SNES game two years later. While the delay behind the game’s release is unknown, it didn’t help its performance. Unfortunately, Bebe’s Kids is a poorly made game. The action is incredibly slow, and gameplay is dull except for drawn-out fights where enemies barely take any damage. Poorly designed controls made everything difficult, and ultimately, the game was a commercial failure.
