As a big sci-fi fan, I was excited to see Tubi adding a bunch of cool titles this month, including movies like Gemini Man and Timecrimes. But I just found out one of my favorites, a bit of a hidden gem that’s finally getting a reboot, is leaving the platform soon! It’s a shame, because I was hoping to revisit it before the new version comes out. Gotta squeeze in a watch before it’s gone!
Just weeks after becoming available on Tubi, the sci-fi film I Am Number Four is already scheduled to leave the streaming service at the end of the month. Based on the Lorien Legacies young adult novels, the movie tells the story of a teenage alien hiding on Earth, trying to survive against dangerous bounty hunters. He must learn to control his powers after the others of his kind are killed. While I Am Number Four did reasonably well in theaters in 2011, earning $150 million on a $50 million budget, there’s talk of a reboot. The original screenwriters are reportedly returning, but details have been limited since the news first appeared in 2024.
I Am Number Four Was Meant To Be the Start of a Multi-Film YA Franchise
Fans of the original I Am Number Four movie have been waiting a long time for the upcoming reboot. The first film was meant to kick off a series based on the popular Lorien Legacies books, and it seemed like a sure bet for a franchise, especially since young adult movie series were so popular at the time. The 2011 movie even ended with a setup for a sequel. However, despite earning $150 million, the film didn’t perform as well as hoped – it didn’t reach the level of success seen by franchises like Twilight or The Hunger Games. Critics and audiences gave it mixed reviews (32% and 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively), and changes from the original book led to plans for a sequel, based on the book The Power of Six, being cancelled.
As a big fan of young adult sci-fi, I was really bummed when they cancelled the plans for a sequel to I Am Number Four. Looking back, even though the first movie didn’t wow critics or audiences back in 2011, it’s surprisingly gained a following over the years. What was once seen as a box office flop is now considered a bit of a hidden gem from that whole 2010s YA movie boom. Honestly, it’s a really fun watch – it’s got that classic YA romance, plenty of action-packed CGI, and I genuinely think if they’d made a second one, they could have built out a really interesting world.
Where to Stream I Am Number Four After It Leaves Tubi?
The movie I Am Number Four is leaving Tubi soon, but you’ll still be able to watch it online. It’s currently streaming on AMC+ and Philo, and you can also rent or buy it from various digital retailers.
