Two classic games originally released on the PlayStation 1 are surprisingly coming back, but there‘s a catch. One will be available on Nintendo Switch and Steam on December 15th, while the other is expected to launch sometime in 2016. Unfortunately, PlayStation and Xbox fans won’t be able to play them on current or last-generation consoles—no announcements have been made for PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, or Xbox One. Also, both games will only be available in Japanese, even though they were previously released in English-speaking regions, so knowing the language will be essential. Hopefully, English versions will be added later.
Two classic PlayStation games are making a comeback, starting with Tail of the Sun, an action RPG from Artdink originally released in 1995 on December 15th. Following that, in 1996, Artdink’s Aquanut’s Holiday will be re-released. Both games came out three decades ago, and now Artdink is bringing them back after 30 years. Originally, Sony helped publish and translate these games for Western audiences, but they aren’t involved this time, which might be why these re-releases aren’t widely available in the West.
More Information
It’s surprising to see these games return because they weren’t very popular when they first came out and appealed to a small audience. No one expected them to make a comeback, but Artdink is bringing them back through a new project called Artdink Game Log, which aims to re-release and port classic Artdink titles to today’s gaming systems.
When these games were released, it wasn’t clear if they were being updated for modern systems. As far as we can tell, they’re simply older versions of the games, without any new features or improvements.
If you’re not excited about this particular announcement, don’t worry – there’s a lot of renewed interest in classic PlayStation games. As part of this trend, a 30-year-old game originally only available in Japan is now coming to western markets for the first time.
We’d love to hear your thoughts! Please leave a comment or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. Would you be interested in playing these PS1 games if they were released in English?
