After being announced in September 2023, Ubisoft has now confirmed that The Division 3 is officially in development. This is the next major installment in the Tom Clancy’s The Division series, known for its open-world gameplay, shooting action, and RPG elements.
Julian Gerighty, the creative director of Star Wars Outlaws and an executive producer at Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, revealed during Thursday’s New Game Plus Showcase that the game is progressing exceptionally well and looking very promising.
The third installment of The Division is currently in development, and that’s public knowledge. According to a recent interview, it’s looking incredibly promising. While details are limited, the team at Massive Entertainment is working tirelessly to create a game that they believe will be just as influential as the original Division.
I still remember when the first *The Division* came out in 2016 – it was a huge deal! The way it recreated a snowy, broken-down New York City was just incredible. But beyond the graphics, it really set the standard for looter shooters with that third-person perspective. And honestly, I think its *Survival* expansion, especially the Dark Zone, was one of the first times we really saw that tense, ‘extraction shooter’ gameplay done right – it’s influenced so many games since then.
It’s noteworthy that the game’s producer believes it could be as influential as The Division. This creates considerable anticipation for Ubisoft and Massive’s newest installment in the series. While the producer didn’t share any further details, the fact that the project is highly ambitious is still encouraging.
Despite the brief discussion, Gerighty shared details about the upcoming Survivors expansion for The Division 2, which was the main focus of Massive Entertainment’s presentation. The expansion is currently slated for release in 2026.
The new game, Survivors, is heavily inspired by the original The Division and its Survival expansion, and is led by the same director, Magnus Jansén. It reimagines Washington D.C. as a harsh, snow-covered landscape with changing weather. Gameplay will be similar to the Survival mode, combining player-versus-player and player-versus-environment action, with a focus on scavenging resources, exploring new areas, and extracting with your loot.
A team in Paris is finishing up work on a mobile version of The Division. The game will take place in the same New York City and begin with the same pandemic as the original, but it will feature a completely new story and gameplay specifically designed for mobile devices.
Ubisoft has attempted spinoffs of The Division before – they previously worked on a free-to-play game called The Division Heartland which was later cancelled in 2024. However, the gameplay footage shown suggests this new one is very likely to be released.
Following the successful outcome of delaying Assassin’s Creed Shadows to improve its quality, the publisher has decided to postpone other upcoming games, including The Division, to ensure they meet high standards. This likely means fans won’t see The Division 3 until 2028.
Fortunately, the first two games are included with Xbox Game Pass, meaning you can play them on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs if you’re a subscriber to Microsoft’s gaming service.
