Ubisoft, the French video game company, is apparently bringing back a game series that was previously thought to be finished. If this revival is successful, it could mean the series has a future. With recent changes at Ubisoft, including new investments and leadership, it’s likely they’re testing out older games to see if they still have potential. For now, though, this is the only instance of them doing so.
So, I was reading the latest from Tom Henderson – he’s usually spot-on with Ubisoft news – and it’s pretty interesting. He’s the same person who originally said Watch Dogs was finished, which honestly seemed believable at the time given how things were going. But apparently things have turned around! Knowing Henderson’s history with Ubisoft leaks, I’m inclined to believe this new report too.
Ubisoft IP Getting Second Chance
Henderson reports that Watch Dogs is being revived, but Ubisoft’s approach is unusual. They aren’t making a new game or re-releasing the first or second installments, which were more successful. Instead, they’re re-releasing the third game, which didn’t perform well and effectively ended the series.
According to a new report, Ubisoft is re-releasing Watch Dogs Legion. What’s unusual is that this isn’t just a simple re-release – it will include new content, be created without motion capture technology, and feature a new “night mode.”
Released in 2020, Watch Dogs Legion received mixed to negative reviews, scoring between 66 and 74 on Metacritic. It also didn’t perform well with players and sold significantly fewer copies than the previous two games in the series. That’s why it’s surprising to see Ubisoft not only revisit this particular installment, but also invest further resources into new content and motion capture. While a remake of the original Watch Dogs might be successful, it’s difficult to see many people being interested in this re-release.
The new report doesn’t include important details like which platforms the game will be available on, its release date, or price. Also, the information it does contain should be viewed with skepticism.
