The latest installment in the popular Saw horror series, a 2021 thriller, is coming to Netflix soon. This ninth film features Chris Rock as a detective trying to catch someone who’s copying the Jigsaw killer.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw begins streaming on Netflix in March
The movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw will be available to stream on Netflix starting Thursday, March 19, 2026. It brought the Saw horror series back after a five-year break, but it’s more of a new story within the same universe rather than a continuation of the original plot.
Chris Rock specifically asked Darren Lynn Bousman, the director of Saw II, III, and IV, to direct Spiral. Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger were the main writers, and Chris Rock also contributed as a writer and producer. The creators of the original Saw films, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, joined the project as executive producers.
I was so excited to see Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Detective Zeke Banks, alongside Samuel L. Jackson playing his father, Marcus Banks! Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols rounded out a great cast as Detective William and Captain Angie. It was a bit strange, though, learning this was the first Saw movie where Tobin Bell didn’t play Jigsaw – a real shift for the series!
In a 2018 interview, Tobin Bell said he was always willing to come back to the Saw movies. He would have returned for Spiral if the story had delved into the backstory of Billy the Puppet, but the film focused on a different killer, leaving no room for his character. Fortunately, he was able to reprise his role in Saw X a couple of years later.
Director Peter Bousman told Radio Times he deliberately avoided featuring Jigsaw in the movie as a sign of respect for both the character and longtime fans. He explained that, while it was the ninth film in the series, it wasn’t intended as a true ‘Saw 9’ because he felt Tobin Bell’s portrayal of Jigsaw was irreplaceable.
Originally, Lionsgate intended to release Spiral: From the Book of Saw in October 2020. However, the release was delayed until May 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an average score of 39%, while audiences rated it higher at 75%. With worldwide earnings of around $40 million, Spiral performed as the lowest-grossing film in the Saw series.
