People have been closely following Savannah Guthrie’s journey to learn more about her mother, Nancy Guthrie, so even small pieces of information feel significant.
When the co-host of Today suddenly left her seat during the show on May 6th, viewers hoped it meant there was news in the case of the 84-year-old woman who disappeared from her Arizona home on February 1st – a case that has so far puzzled investigators.
Savannah returned to work on April 6th, after a months-long search that she’d openly shared with her more than two million Instagram followers.
She previously told Hoda Kotb that she couldn’t pretend to be someone she wasn’t, but felt she had to return because her family was so important. She believes being there for them is what she’s meant to do right now.
And, yes, she’s still asking the public to share any intel they may find.
Police have determined that a human bone discovered seven miles from Nancy’s home on May 7th wasn’t related to any criminal activity, according to a Tucson Police Department spokesperson. Savannah Guthrie also dismissed rumors suggesting her brother Camron Guthrie, sister Annie Guthrie, or brother-in-law Tomasso Cioni were involved, calling the speculation “irresponsible and cruel.”
Similar to Elizabeth Smart, a kidnapping survivor who pointed out that people have been found alive after being missing for many years, Savannah remains hopeful that her mother will be found.
In a Mother’s Day message on May 10th, the journalist shared their deep longing, writing, ‘We miss you constantly, and we’ll never give up searching for you. We won’t find peace until you’re home.’
In a statement to KVOA News 4 Tucson in March, the siblings and their spouses pleaded with the public to take another look at their mother’s case. They asked anyone with information – even seemingly insignificant details from camera footage, notes, texts, or memories of conversations – to come forward, as it could be crucial to solving the mystery. They emphasized that no piece of information is too small to share.
The investigation into Nancy Guthrie is still ongoing, but here’s a summary of what’s been revealed so far.

Nancy Guthrie, mother to Annie, Camron, and Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, around 9:30 p.m. on January 31st, according to the Pima County police.

Police confirmed to Today that Nancy, age 84, was reported missing by her family on February 1st. A friend became worried when Nancy didn’t attend church that morning and alerted her family. After searching her property for about an hour, her children contacted authorities and reported her missing around noon.
I remember Sheriff Chris Nanos explaining how the investigation started, with homicide detectives immediately going to the victim’s home. He walked us through the very first steps they took.
I was really struck by what the authorities shared in the press conference on February 2nd. They explained they don’t usually call in the sheriff for situations like this one, but what they discovered inside the house was deeply troubling. It wasn’t just the initial report; what they actually found at the scene was what really made this case stand out. It was something they hadn’t expected, and it clearly worried them.
This isn’t how things usually work,” Nanos explained. “Normally, our homicide detectives are called to investigate when someone dies. But in this case, we sent them based on what the land surveyors reported.”

As a long-time follower of this case, I was relieved to hear the authorities finally confirmed what many of us suspected: something terrible happened at Nancy’s house. They’ve officially stated they believe a crime occurred there, and it’s a small comfort to know they’re treating it as such.
During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos stated that investigators now believe they have confirmed a crime scene after processing the location. He asked for the public’s assistance, noting that the community has consistently helped solve difficult cases and he hopes they will do so again.
The sheriff pointed out that Nancy had difficulty walking—she couldn’t walk even a short distance on her own—which led him to suspect she didn’t disappear voluntarily.
He stated definitively, “She didn’t simply leave on her own.” He explained that evidence at the location suggests she didn’t leave voluntarily.

The search for Nancy is ongoing, and officials are concerned because she requires daily medication to stay healthy, and she doesn’t have it with her.
During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos explained that an 84-year-old woman is facing serious health problems and urgently needs medication. Without it within 24 hours, her condition could become life-threatening.
We’re asking anyone with information about this – if you’ve seen or heard anything at all – to please get in touch. Call 911. We want to avoid another tragedy and really need the public’s help.
Although Nancy has faced some health challenges, Dr. Nanos highlighted that her mental sharpness remains excellent.
According to Dr. Nanos, Nancy Guthrie is mentally alert and this isn’t related to dementia. She’s still very sharp. The family wants to emphasize that she didn’t simply wander off, and any physical limitations are just due to her age.
With the search for Nancy still underway, Nanos expressed his hope that she will be found safe.
“I hope we find her safe and sound,” he emphasized, “but we cannot ignore what’s in front of us.”

The day after Nancy was reported missing, the anchor of the Today show shared how difficult this time is for her family.
Speaking for my family, I want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts, prayers, and messages we’ve received,” she shared on February 2nd during an appearance on NBC’s morning show. “Our top priority right now is bringing Nancy home safely.
She expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts in the case and asked anyone with information to please reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Once Savannah Guthrie learned her mother, Nancy, had been reported missing, her colleagues on the Today show immediately expressed their support publicly.
Jenna Bush Hager shared on the February 2nd episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle that she is personally close to Nancy and has a lot of affection for her.
She continued, saying they were keeping Savannah and her family in their thoughts and prayers.
Meanwhile, Sheinelle Jones emphasized the importance of community during this difficult time.
She felt the show was at its strongest when it asked viewers to help, encouraging them to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s department with any details about the situation, even if they seemed insignificant.
She added, “So we’re sending our prayers but we’re also sending our collective action.”
Before concluding the segment, both hosts continued, “We love you, Savannah.”

And Sunday Today anchor Willie Geist also urged fans to keep an eye out for Nancy.
Oh my gosh, I’m so worried! I saw this post on Instagram from someone desperately trying to help Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy. They were asking everyone to call the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona if they have any clue where she might be. It was posted on February 2nd, and they even included the phone number for the sheriff’s department. I just hope she’s found safe, I’m so concerned!
Savannah’s former colleague, Hoda Kotb, also responded to the surprising announcement. She shared a heartwarming photo of Savannah and Nancy together on the Today show set. In a simple message accompanying the February 2nd Instagram post, Hoda included only a red heart and praying hands emoji.

Police have marked Nancy’s home in Arizona as a crime scene, but they say there’s no reason for the public to be worried.
At a press conference on February 2nd, Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated that he didn’t believe there was an immediate danger, but emphasized that the investigation was ongoing and much work remained.
Savannah hasn’t been on Today since February 1st, when her mother was reported missing. However, local authorities have been checking in with her to ensure her well-being.
The sheriff confirmed they had spoken with her. She has a security team that has been communicating with them all night, but they aren’t ruling anything out at this point.

On Feb. 2, Pima County police shared a series of updates on the timeline of Nancy’s disappearance.
Investigators now think the woman was likely taken from her home against her will, perhaps while she was sleeping, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson on February 2nd. Detectives are investigating the possibility that she was kidnapped.

I was so shocked to hear about Nancy potentially being taken from her home in Arizona, right from her bed! It’s terrifying. Savannah responded with a really heartfelt plea, and honestly, it just shows how much everyone cares about finding her.
In a recent Instagram post on February 2nd, she shared her strong faith, writing, “We believe in the power of prayer, in coming together with love and hope, and in the goodness of people. Most importantly, we believe in God.”
Savannah continued, thanking everyone for keeping her mother, Nancy, in their thoughts and prayers. She described Nancy as a woman of strong beliefs and a devoted person, and asked for continued prayers, believing they would provide comfort and strength right now.
She added, “we need you.”
To conclude her plea, Savannah shared a Bible verse from Isaiah.
She shared a verse from Isaiah, writing, ‘He will keep those with steadfast hearts, who trust in the Lord, in perfect peace.’ She added that this message holds true for everyone, always.
Savannah continued, “Bring her home.”

Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated that DNA evidence was discovered at Nancy’s home, which is now being treated as a crime scene.
We collected samples and are hopeful they contain enough DNA to help us identify what we’re investigating,” he said in a report on NBC’s Today on February 3.
Two days after Nancy went missing, Nanos explained what happened leading up to her disappearance in a press conference.
According to Nanos, the doorbell camera stopped working at 1:47 a.m., about four hours after she got back from a family visit. She shared this information at a press conference on February 5th.
The software identified someone at the door, but the video was automatically deleted because Nancy didn’t pay for a subscription. However, the representative assured her they were still working to recover the footage.
The sheriff explained that Nancy’s pacemaker app lost connection with her phone at 2:28 a.m. Later, at 11:56 a.m., her family found she was missing, and they called 911 at 12:03 p.m. to report it to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
About ten minutes after receiving the initial report, he explained that patrol teams would arrive on scene. Then, they would begin a response involving both search-and-rescue and detective units.

On February 4th, Savannah, Camron, and Annie read letters they had written, hoping to convince whoever had taken their mother to bring Nancy home safely.
As a family, we’re doing absolutely everything we can and are open to communication. Honestly, it’s a scary time because things can be so easily twisted or faked online. Our biggest need right now is simply confirmation – we need to know she’s safe and that whoever has her can prove it. That’s what we’re desperately hoping for.
My mom is the center of our world and everything to us. Sadly, her health is very delicate, and she’s in constant pain. She doesn’t have the medication she desperately needs, both to stay alive and to feel better.
The next day, Camron confirmed in a separate video that the family was still “waiting for contact.”
We’re asking whoever has our mother to please contact us. We haven’t received any direct communication, and we desperately need to establish a line of communication so we can begin to resolve this situation.
During a press conference on February 5th, FBI special agent Heith Janke announced the arrest of Derrick Callella from California. Callella is accused of sending fake text messages as part of an attempt to profit from the situation, and authorities are investigating a detailed ransom letter shared with TMZ as a serious threat. Callella has not yet entered a plea and was released on a $20,000 bond.
However, he noted, the Guthrie family was “still waiting for communication.”

On February 7th, the day officials told Today they had searched Annie’s Arizona home as a routine step in the investigation, Savannah posted a new video on Instagram suggesting her earlier wish had come true.
Speaking while holding hands with Camron and Annie, she said they understood the message and pleaded for their mother’s return. They explained that having her back was the only thing that would bring them peace and allow them to celebrate with her.
And if her intentions weren’t clear, Savannah added, “This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”

Investigators shared surveillance photos of a person of interest in the case on February 10th.
Footage from a camera on Nancy’s property shows a person wearing a ski mask and carrying a backpack walking up to the house. The individual then appears to punch the camera, damaging it. Police had previously noted the camera was broken when they arrived at the scene.
For the past eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been collaborating with private companies to find any lost, damaged, or hidden images and videos from Nancy Guthrie’s home. This effort included recovering data after recording devices were removed. The recovered video was found as leftover data within those systems, according to a statement shared with TopMob News.
“Working with our partners,” the note continued, “law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”
Two days after the FBI shared video of the person who approached Nancy’s house, investigators provided a description of the suspect.
According to the FBI’s Phoenix office, the suspect is a man around 5’9” to 5’10” tall with an average build. He was seen in a video wearing a black ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack with a capacity of 25 liters.
The FBI is now offering up to $100,000 – an increase from $50,000 – to anyone who can help find Nancy Guthrie or bring those responsible for her disappearance to justice.

After Nancy had been missing for over two weeks, Pima County Sheriff Nanos released a statement to explain who might be connected to the case.
In a statement on February 16th, authorities confirmed that the entire Guthrie family – including all brothers, sisters, and their spouses – have been ruled out as suspects in this case. They emphasized that the family has been fully cooperative and are themselves considered victims.

The gloves discovered close to Nancy’s house didn’t seem to connect with the rest of the evidence in the case, according to police.
On March 2nd, Pima County Sheriff Nanos explained to KVOA, the local NBC station, that around three weeks prior, they had found a pair of gloves with DNA about two miles from the victim’s home. At the time, investigators strongly believed the gloves were related to a restaurant.
Although some people noticed the gloves in the doorbell footage looked similar to those worn by the suspect, Nanos dismissed this as just a guess. Investigators had already identified the glove’s owner – an employee at a local restaurant – and confirmed they were not connected to the crime.

After a human bone was discovered about seven miles from Nancy’s home on May 7th, investigators thoroughly examined the area, but later determined it wasn’t connected to the case.
According to a Tucson Police Department spokesperson, the evidence they found wasn’t related to any crime. They described it as part of an archaeological study of prehistoric artifacts.
