Many fans consider Batman: The Animated Series a true classic, and it remains incredibly popular years later. Its beautiful animation, engaging stories, and memorable characters have made it a standard for other shows. Now, Upper Deck has released a new trading card set based on the series. Grant Sandground, Upper Deck’s Vice President of Product Development, has highlighted some of the set’s most exciting cards, including a rare autograph card from Kevin Conroy. You can even watch us open a full box of the cards in the video below!
From the beginning of their partnership, Upper Deck and DC Comics planned to feature Batman: The Animated Series. According to Sandground, the show was immediately considered a key element due to its strong appeal and nostalgic value. With 85 episodes, the series offers a wealth of characters, stories, and visuals – everything Upper Deck needs to create a diverse and engaging trading card collection. The show’s extensive content provides ample opportunities for screenshots and imagery, making it a perfect fit for their products.
The Batman: The Animated Series Set Arrives At The Perfect Time

This set is launching at a great moment. ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ remains incredibly popular, and trading card collecting has seen a huge surge in popularity recently, with more people than ever getting involved.
As a collector myself, I’ve definitely noticed everyone’s really into collecting things again – not just anything, but trading cards, especially those tied to pop culture. That’s exactly what we aimed for with our Batman: The Animated Series cards. Knowing how the market is now, we really wanted to create something that a true fan of the show would need to collect. We wanted it to be the kind of set you could spend hours organizing, putting into a binder, and completing – that classic, old-school collecting experience. If you’re a Batman: The Animated Series fan, trust me, you’ll want to grab them all!
When we started planning a product for Batman: The Animated Series, our main goal was to create something affordable for a wide range of fans. We used the successful model of our most popular trading card line – the NHL cards, which we’ve been producing for over 36 years. This core product appeals to both casual and dedicated collectors and is available at stores like Target and hobby shops. We wanted to replicate that broad appeal and accessibility with the Batman product.”
A box of Batman: The Animated Series trading cards contains 12 packs, with 6 cards in each pack, totaling 72 cards per box. Of those 72 cards, about 36 will be from the main 90-card base set. This was intentional – the goal isn’t for collectors to complete the set with just one box. Instead, they encourage buying two or three boxes to create a more engaging collecting experience. While the 90-card set is the most common goal, completing it will still likely require trading with other collectors. Alternatively, collectors can choose to buy individual cards or trade to finish their sets, even if they only purchase one box, according to Sandground.
The Rookie Cards of Batman: The Animated Series

Beyond the standard cards, this set includes special “UD Debut” cards, which are similar to rookie cards for Batman. According to Sandground, to complete the full set, collectors will need the 90 main storyline cards, plus the 30 Debut cards. These Debut cards highlight individual characters and are designed to mimic the appeal of rookie cards, offering a chance to find a “rookie card” for popular characters like Batman, the Joker, Harley Quinn, or the Riddler within each pack.
We created special ‘Debut’ cards for 30 key characters, and they’re a bit harder to find. You can expect about 3 Debut cards per box, meaning you’ll find one roughly every four packs. Since there are 30 different Debut cards, collecting the whole set will likely take around 10 boxes. This is intentionally more challenging than the main 90-card set. We designed it this way to encourage continued collecting – people enjoy a box, come back for more, and might even start searching online for specific Debut cards they need.
Many card collectors focus on specific characters rather than completing entire sets. For example, a Batman fan might try to collect every version of Batman’s first card, aiming for a complete ‘rainbow’ of different parallels. This approach is common in both sports and entertainment card collecting. People often collect cards featuring their favorite characters – whether it’s Poison Ivy, Catwoman, or anyone else. Someone might want to collect every single Catwoman card from ‘Batman: The Animated Series,’ and that’s perfectly fine. We designed our products to support this type of focused collecting.
Parallels, Outburst, and Even Rarer Cards Are In The Mix

Debut cards are already difficult to find, but there are even rarer versions available, and that’s just the beginning of what this set offers. While you get three regular Debut cards per box, the blue border versions are much scarcer – only one per box, along with one blue base set card. The rarity increases with border color changes. Purple-bordered cards are serial-numbered, limited to 299 copies each. Orange borders are even harder to find, with only 99 copies available, and that applies to Debut cards as well. The Catwoman card is limited to just 99 copies. The rarest of all are the gold-bordered cards, of which only 25 were made. This makes completing a full-color ‘rainbow’ Batman Debut set extremely challenging, as collectors compete for those final 25 gold cards worldwide.
We also used some exciting new technology with these cards. We’re calling them ‘Outburst’ cards, and they feature a really striking, shimmering effect. You’ll find one Outburst card and one Debut card in each box. These Outburst cards are limited to just the 30 Debut cards – numbers 91 through 120. We created fewer parallel versions of the storyline cards compared to the character cards, as Sandground explained.
Collectors will definitely want to find the character cards in their rainbow versions. You’ll find one rainbow card per box, but rarer cards, like Mr. Freeze, appear in about 1 out of every 30 boxes – and they look amazing! There are also incredibly rare versions called ‘Outbursts’ where the silver part is red, and only 25 of these are available, each numbered. The most sought-after card is the Gold Outburst – there’s only one of each character in gold. So, there’s a single gold Batman, a single gold Harley Quinn, and so on. These unique cards are likely to become very valuable and could sell for thousands of dollars to collectors.

Beyond that, we included a special holographic treatment. These holographs are even harder to find than the regular Outburst cards. Instead of being numbered, they’re distributed randomly, with about 3 appearing in every 12-box case – roughly one per four boxes. This treatment is only applied to the 30 Debut cards, and there are 30 different holographic designs – they look fantastic! There’s also an even rarer gold version of the holofoil. You’ll see the border is gold instead of silver. These are incredibly scarce – only 1 in every 1440 packs, or 1 in every 10 cases. There are 30 different gold Outburst cards, meaning very few copies of each one were ever made.
We also created clear-cut cards, and those parallels are very well-known in our main hockey product. Cards like the Outburst and the Gold Outburst 1 of 1s are incredibly popular. Just last year, a $250,000 reward was offered for a Macklin Celebrini Outburst 1 of 1 gold card – it’s amazing! That’s what I mean when I say this product has a strong foundation, built on cards like these. The acetate debut cards, and the Outburst debuts specifically, are also key. I believe the acetate cards appear only once per case – about one in every twelve boxes – making them quite rare, but you should be able to find them for resale.

“We also did the playing cards. We kind of did a full deck of playing cards, and we did all the way up to a full 52-card functional deck. They look like playing cards, and this is a fully functional deck. The jokers are short printed, but you can see a red Joker, a black Joker. The aces and the face cards are short printed as well, so they’re a little tougher, but you do get playing cards. You get 1 playing card per pack, so you can definitely work and build on them. Then we did scarcer gold-tinted versions of the playing cards. I think they’re 2 or 3 per case. We also did really nice stickers. These are 1 per box, they’re prismatic stickers. Really, really nice looking ones,” Sandground said.
Batman’s Autographs Will Be Highly Sought After, Especially the Rare Kevin Conroy Autograph

The set also includes fantastic autographs from various people involved with the series. This is just one of the many improvements Upper Deck made compared to the single Batman: The Animated Series set released during the original show’s run.
Finding an autographed card is pretty rare – there are only a few in each case of 12 boxes. However, this isn’t the first time trading cards have been made for the classic Batman Animated Series. Topps released two sets of cards back in 1993, while the show was still on TV, and they were popular for their time, according to Sandground.
“Very simple, like just a 90-card base set and 10 inserts that were like 1 in 6 packs or something like that. So not a lot of rarity and collectibility. Where today’s consumer wants the autograph cards, they want sketch cards, they want numbered cards and technology cards. Never before for Batman the Animated Series has there been autograph cards, but we did manage to come to terms with eight of the actors, the voice actors, so you get stuff like John Glover as the Riddler and Paul Williams is the Penguin,” Sandground said.

The new ‘Cold Snap’ card set features some impressive technology and beautiful autograph cards, which are quite rare to find. We also included hand-drawn sketch cards – you can expect about one per hobby case, though it’s not guaranteed. Collectors can also hunt for printing plates used during the card production process – we’ve included cyan, magenta, yellow, and black plates, creating a variety of exciting chase cards within the set, according to Sandground.
We absolutely had to include Kevin Conroy in this project. He’s considered by many fans to be the definitive voice of Batman, even among actors like Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale. His work on Batman: The Animated Series is incredibly iconic and important. Sadly, Mr. Conroy passed away in 2022 after a battle with cancer, so we collaborated with DC and Warner Bros. to obtain some of his original autographs for this product, as a tribute to his legacy.”

Before he passed away, Kevin Conroy signed autographs at various conventions and collector events. We contacted Celebworx, the company he worked with for these signings, and they still had a stock of autographs he’d signed beyond what was requested at the shows. They had stored these away, and we were able to purchase them directly. This means the Kevin Conroy cut signatures we have come with the best possible proof of authenticity – they came straight from the company that organized his signings in 2016, 2018, and 2020. We were fortunate enough to acquire a small number of these signatures, as Sandground explained.
The autographs we’re including are quite large – bigger than standard trading cards. To display them, we created oversized cards to hold the actual signature pieces. Because the real autographs are too big to fit in regular packs, we’re using redemption cards. A few lucky collectors will find these redemption cards in each pack, giving them a chance to get a Kevin Conroy signature card – that’s the most exciting item in the whole set. If you’re looking for the ultimate, most sought-after chase card, these Kevin Conroy signatures are at the very top.
We unfortunately weren’t able to reach an agreement with Mark Hamill, who famously voiced the Joker in the series, in time to include him in the final product. We had discussions with his representatives, but couldn’t finalize terms before we had to move forward with production to avoid further delays. We also didn’t produce a large quantity of this item,” Sandground explained.
We’ve completely sold out of this product – the demand has been much higher than we anticipated, and even surprised some major online retailers. A month ago, these boxes were available for around $120, but now they’re selling for about $250 due to limited quantities. This clearly shows strong interest in the product, even without a signature from Mark Hamill. We’re still in talks with Mr. Hamill and hope to collaborate with him on future opportunities.

We’re definitely exploring the possibility of creating more products based on this popular item. The initial demand has been surprisingly high, and people are really excited about it. While we knew it was well-liked, we weren’t sure how it would perform in the market. Given the enthusiastic response, we’re now actively considering what other products we could develop using this same concept, as we shouldn’t ignore this opportunity, according to Sandground.
Sandground believes this product successfully appeals to both traditional and modern collectors. It offers the enjoyment of classic collecting – building sets, trading, and organizing with physical sheets and binders – while also providing the excitement of chasing rare items that are popular on social media. He feels they’ve effectively blended these two different approaches to collecting.
