Vanessa’s Death In Daredevil Born Again Sets Up The Return Of This Netflix Ironfist Villain

The most recent episodes of Daredevil: Born Again have been devastating for Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin. In the episode “Gloves Off,” his wife, Vanessa, was seriously injured by Bullseye just as she was becoming his equal. Sadly, she died from her injuries in the following episode, “The Grand Design,” leaving Fisk filled with grief and fury.

In the comics, Vanessa passed away due to an illness, but even then, Wilson Fisk was left to deal with the consequences of his criminal life. Things became even more complicated when The Hand brought her back to life, though she ultimately died again – a separate issue entirely.

Even though Vanessa was Wilson Fisk’s great love, he might eventually find romance again, possibly with someone connected to Iron Fist – perhaps even a former enemy.

Return Of Iron Fist’s Mary Walker

Mary Walker, also known as Typhoid Mary, first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Netflix series Iron Fist, portrayed by Alice Eve. Initially an enemy of Danny Rand, her story could connect with Wilson Fisk following Vanessa’s death, potentially setting up her return as a villain connected to the Kingpin.

Mary, both in the comic books and the TV series, experiences dissociative identity disorder, similar to the character Moon Knight played by Oscar Isaac, but her condition is portrayed in a more subtle way. She has two distinct personalities: the kind and compassionate Mary, and the tough, battle-hardened Walker.

Initially, she was hired by the Kingpin to emotionally and physically harm Daredevil, and quickly became one of his most reliable agents. Despite frequent disagreements with Fisk about her methods against the vigilante, their conflicts ultimately led to a romantic connection.

While Vincent D’Onofrio’s portrayal of Kingpin shows a completely devoted relationship with Vanessa, the Kingpin in the original comic books wasn’t as faithful. He actually had an affair with a character named Typhoid Mary.

Eventually, years after Vanessa’s passing, Fisk became the mayor of New York and asked Mary to lead his security team once more. They resolved their past issues and, in time, fell in love, eventually marrying each other.

Could a romantic relationship develop between Mary Walker, played by Alice Eve, and Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio? Considering it’s been a while since we’ve seen Mary Walker in the story, anything could happen.

How Kingpin and Mary Walker Could Work

Although Mary Walker was a sympathetic character and not as unpredictable as her villainous persona, Typhoid, the Iron Fist series left a storyline unresolved involving ‘Bloody Mary.’ In the comics, this represents a hidden third personality, even more violent than Typhoid, which is comparable to the Jack Lockley persona from Moon Knight.

In the final moments of Iron Fist, Walker went off to investigate Mary’s other personality and what caused it to emerge. With a significant amount of time passing since then, Mary’s condition could have changed considerably – it’s possible this other personality has become the most prominent of the three.

Rather than portraying Bloody Mary as simply a violent, man-hating killer, she could be reimagined as being more akin to Mary Walker’s other personality, Typhoid – complete with her signature makeup and abilities.

Interestingly, in the comics, Mary actually has mutant abilities – limited telekinesis and pyrokinesis – but the Netflix series removed those powers, likely for a more grounded feel or because the X-Men hadn’t been acquired by Disney yet. The show could explain how she suddenly gains these powers by making Bloody Mary the only version of her with access to them.

Wilson Fisk isn’t looking for a relationship now, particularly after losing Vanessa. However, he might be drawn to someone like Typhoid Mary in the future, as she embodies a similar willingness to embrace extreme violence.

He’s always kept a dangerous side of himself under control, and Vanessa helped him do that throughout their marriage. Now that she’s gone, it’s impossible to predict how destructive Fisk will become in his quest for revenge.

Scrapped Plans for Typhoid Mary

Five years ago, Erik Oleson, the showrunner for the final season of the popular Netflix series Daredevil, revealed to the #SaveDaredevil campaign that a fourth season was planned with Typhoid Mary as the central villain. Alice Eve would have returned to play Mary, with the storyline including a twisted romance. Oleson described this version of Mary as a “rebooted” character.

I heard that Oleson thought her version of the character would have been really different from what we saw in Season 2 of Iron Fist. Apparently, because of the Bloody Mary storyline, they could have easily brought her back by just introducing this new side of her personality. It sounds like a pretty simple fix, honestly!

The heroes from the old New York Defenders team will reunite in Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again, but Alice Eve’s character, Typhoid Mary, probably won’t be part of it. Still, there’s a possibility she could return in a fresh, reimagined form—someone who could both fuel Kingpin’s darkest tendencies and be influenced by them herself.
