Vin Diesel’s 2020 superhero film didn’t perform well in theaters, but it’s now gaining popularity and finding a new audience on .
Currently, the movie Bloodshot is No. 11 on Hulu’s list of most popular movies this week, according to FlixPatrol. This is a bit of a comeback for the film, which originally underperformed at the box office, earning less than $40 million worldwide despite a $45 million budget. Its release timing was unfortunate, coinciding with the start of the pandemic and widespread theater closures, which significantly impacted its earnings. While critics weren’t impressed – it has a 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – many viewers actually enjoy it, giving it a much higher audience score of 78%.
Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot Is Rising on Hulu
Directed by David S.F. Wilson and written by Jeff Wadlow and Eric Heisserer, Bloodshot stars Vin Diesel as Ray Garrison, a soldier brought back from the dead with incredible powers. Revived by the tech company Rising Spirit Technologies, Ray gains enhanced strength and healing abilities, intended to make him the ultimate weapon. While seeking revenge for his wife’s murder, Ray begins to suspect his memories aren’t what they seem, and he struggles to determine the truth.
I’m really excited about Bloodshot! Vin Diesel is leading the cast, but there’s a fantastic group of actors alongside him. I recognize Eiza Gonzalez from 3 Body Problem, and I’ve also seen Toby Kebbell in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It’s cool to see Talulah Riley (Inception), Lamorne Morris (Spider-Noir), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Johannes Haukur Johannesson (Masters of the Universe), and Alex Hernandez (The Peripheral) are all part of the movie too!
Bloodshot Was Meant to Launch a Cinematic Universe
The movie was planned as the first in a series, aiming to build a cinematic universe based on Valiant Comics heroes. Plans included both direct sequels for Bloodshot and team-up films with other characters. However, the project stalled and never gained momentum, likely because the film didn’t perform well financially or with critics, despite having fans who were eager for a continuation.
Bloodshot first appeared in 1992 and quickly became a leading character for Valiant Comics as the publisher gained popularity in the early 1990s. The original story centers on Angelo Mortalli, a former mob hitman brought back to life through a program called Project Rising Spirit. Because his memories are continually altered, Angelo struggles with his identity and unknowingly works as an assassin for the organization, kept in line by implanted false memories. Over the years, Valiant Comics has reimagined and relaunched the Bloodshot character several times.
