Violent WWII Action Movie ‘Sisu: Road to Revenge’ Is a Netflix Streaming Success After Box Office Flop

The ultimate mash-up between John Wick and Rambo: First Blood is currently blowing up on streaming.

A fantastic WWII action movie came out in 2022, but it didn’t get the attention it deserved. It was a classic revenge story – a man tracking down the Nazis who stole his gold. While it didn’t do well in theaters, critics loved it, giving it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it quickly gained a dedicated following. A sequel was released three years later, and though it also underperformed at the box office, it received even better reviews, with praise focused on its incredibly intense and violent action. Now, that sequel is available on Netflix and is becoming a huge hit with viewers.

While Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is currently leading the way on Netflix, Sisu: Road to Revenge is quickly becoming a hit. Added to Netflix recently, it’s now the third most popular movie, right after The Bad Guys 2 in second place.

Jalmari Helander’s Sisu: Road to Revenge brings back Jorma Tomilla as Aatami Korpi, a resilient prospector nicknamed “the man who refuses to die.” The film follows Aatami as he tears down the house where his family was killed by Nazis, intending to rebuild it in a secure location. However, his plans are complicated by the return of the ruthless German commander, Yeagor Druganov (played by Stephen Lang), who wants to complete the task he started.

‘Sisu: Road to Revenge’ Was Influenced By Some Action Classics

As the name suggests, Sisu: Road to Revenge clearly takes inspiration from films like Rambo and John Wick. The idea of a single, highly skilled warrior – a common theme in later Rambo movies – is central to Sisu. The film’s action sequences and fight style are also heavily influenced by the John Wick franchise, featuring expertly choreographed gunfights and brutal hand-to-hand combat. These scenes are filmed with long takes, avoiding excessive editing and showcasing the performers’ skill.

The film Sisu: Road to Revenge unexpectedly drew inspiration from Mad Max: Fury Road. Though director Jalmari Helander hasn’t directly cited it as an influence, the movie’s high-octane car chases clearly echo Mad Max. The story follows Aatami as he journeys across the country with his family’s house, relentlessly pursued by Yeagor Druganov, who is determined to kill him.

Will ‘Sisu 3’ Ever Happen?

Screen Gems

Despite the first Sisu film’s disappointing performance at the box office, earning only $14 million worldwide, a sequel was surprisingly approved. However, Sisu: Road to Revenge also struggled to attract audiences, bringing in just $9 million globally, effectively ending the franchise. It seems the story of “the man who refused to die” has run its course in theaters. As of now, Sisu 3 hasn’t been confirmed, and with the conclusive ending of Road to Revenge, another film is unlikely to happen.
