The BBC drama Waiting for the Out is based on Andy West’s memoir, The Life Inside. The story follows West as he teaches philosophy to inmates, and explores his personal life, revealing that three people close to him have also been in prison.
Like most adaptations of books, the series follows the main story closely, but there are some significant changes. For example, the main character’s name is Dan instead of Andy, which emphasizes how the series differs from the original book.
Kelly revealed she recently spoke with an executive producer about the possibility of a second season, admitting she asked them the same question fans are wondering.

Kelly explained that when they first started planning, they were already thinking about future installments. However, they’ve been so busy finishing the current one that no one has really considered what comes next. She’s very enthusiastic about the possibility of doing it all over again.
I’d be happy to return if the audience enjoyed it and if both Andy and Josh were interested in continuing. I really connected with the characters and enjoyed working with the cast – everyone was fantastic. I especially loved the characters and feel there’s a lot more story to tell with them.

When questioned about creating new plotlines for the character Dan, played by Josh Finan, and if the events detailed in West’s memoir had been fully used, Kelly explained that the book contains a wealth of deeper, thought-provoking themes. However, he believes they’ve likely told all the stories related to the character Andy.
We weren’t lacking ideas or the ability to discuss further options with Andy. The challenge is figuring out what to focus on next, as there isn’t an obvious answer. However, the source material has a wealth of prison scenes that we haven’t explored yet – there’s a lot more content available.
Waiting for the Out is available to watch in full now on BBC iPlayer.
