Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of Warner Bros. Games, has announced plans to increase shareholder value, which likely means they are seeking a potential buyer for the company. They are also still on track to separate the Warner Bros. and Discovery Global businesses, with that process expected to finish by mid-2026.
In a recent announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav explained that this change is intended to help the company thrive in the current media environment. The goal is to strengthen their key projects, revitalize their film and television studios, and expand HBO Max internationally.
We decided to split the company into two separate media leaders, Warner Bros. and Discovery Global, because we felt it was the best way to move forward. Recently, others in the industry have also begun to recognize the strength of the combined Warner Bros. Discovery assets.
We’re pleased others are noticing the strong value of our company. Because of interest from several potential buyers, we’re now carefully considering all our options to maximize the value of what we own and find the best way to move forward.
The recent announcement focuses mainly on Warner Bros. Discovery’s media and film/TV divisions, but it will also significantly impact their gaming companies. These include well-known game developers like NetherRealm Studios (creators of Mortal Kombat and Injustice), Avalanche Software (known for Hogwarts Legacy), and Rocksteady Studios (the team behind the Batman: Arkham series).
If Warner Bros. Discovery sells the company, its gaming division would also be included in the sale. This could result in job losses at game development studios, or even complete studio closures if the new owner doesn’t want to continue making games internally.
Warner Bros. Discovery hasn’t announced a deadline for evaluating its options. Allen & Company, J.P. Morgan, and Evercore are providing financial guidance during this process.
The company stated that, aside from the planned separation, there’s no guarantee any deal or change will happen. Warner Bros. Discovery doesn’t plan to share any updates on its options unless the board decides on a specific plan or believes more information needs to be released.
Warner Bros. Discovery was struggling with both its movies and TV shows, and back in May, they also announced a drop in revenue from their gaming division. This roughly 48% decrease was largely due to the poor performance of the game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
