Warner Bros’ New Dinosaur Sci-Fi Details Reveal a Masterpiece Inspiration (the Twilight Zone)

After releasing the successful indie horror film It Follows in 2014, director David Robert Mitchell was expected to continue making horror movies. However, he only released one other film since then: Under the Silver Lake, a strange and darkly comedic thriller that received mixed reviews and didn’t perform well in theaters. Now, Warner Bros. has chosen Mitchell to direct a large-scale, ambitious sci-fi thriller involving dinosaurs, with a unique and original premise.

The new movie, The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway (known from The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey) and Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan), is coming to theaters in August. The film follows a couple whose quiet suburban street is suddenly thrown back in time to the age of dinosaurs. While it promises to be an exciting adventure, director Mitchell recently revealed he’s drawing inspiration from the classic science fiction series, The Twilight Zone.

The End of Oak Street Isn’t Just Another Jurassic Park Clone

David Robert Mitchell readily admits he’s a huge fan of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. “Like many people, I absolutely love the first Jurassic Park movie,” he told EW.

Despite enjoying Jurassic Park, Mitchell explained he wanted to create something different with his dinosaur movie. He wasn’t simply aiming to replicate that film. Instead, he was inspired by the feel of 1980s Amblin Entertainment productions, like The Twilight Zone and Poltergeist, and wanted to capture that same atmosphere in his project.

What I really love about this work is how it blends compelling characters with amazing visuals – it reminds me of some of my favorite films from the 70s and 80s. It’s not just one thing either; it has moments that are dramatic, scary, funny, and everything in between. It really takes you on an emotional journey.

What is The Movie About?

According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie begins with a strange cosmic event that pulls an entire suburban neighborhood, including Oak Street, to a mysterious location where dinosaurs roam. The Platt family quickly realizes they must rely on each other to survive, but their existing family issues make that a challenge.

I’m really excited about The End of Oak Street! Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway are playing the parents, Greg and Denise Platt, and the incredibly talented Maisy Stella and Christian Convery are their kids, Audrey and Brian. It’s hitting theaters on August 14th, and I’ll definitely be chatting about it over on the ComicBook Forum with other movie fans!
