‘We Both Had Breakdowns.’ The Creed Scene That Made Sylvester Stallone And Michael B. Jordan Emotional On Set

I don’t act myself, but I have a lot of respect for actors who truly commit to their roles. Delivering a believable performance in a serious drama often means tapping into difficult emotions, which can be emotionally draining. Hearing stories like the one about Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone crying together while filming Ryan Coogler’s Creed only deepens my appreciation for their dedication.

Sylvester Stallone recently recounted a story in a career-spanning video for GQ. While reflecting on roles like Rambo and The Expendables, he focused on his time as Rocky Balboa and how the series evolved with the Creed films. He described a particularly meaningful moment he shared with his Creed co-star, Michael B. Jordan, and then continued, saying…

I recall filming a training scene with Adonis where I was holding a pad for him. I suddenly felt incredibly sick and started to cry, realizing something was seriously wrong. I kept apologizing, and it unexpectedly caused him to burst into tears for about five minutes – even though the cameras weren’t recording at the time.

When thinking about the film, it seems Stallone is recalling a scene from Creed where Rocky and Adonis are boxing late at night. Initially, the sparring session goes well, but Rocky suddenly feels dizzy and has to vomit into a bucket by the ropes. He’s then taken to the hospital and diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. There were discussions about killing off Rocky in the movie, but Stallone decided against it.

The actors found filming that scene incredibly emotionally draining, and both of them broke down crying at the end of the day. Stallone explained,

You know, during filming, something really strange happened. A particular scene hit me on a deeply personal level, and it unlocked a lot of old emotions. The actor I was working with and I just completely lost it – we were both sobbing uncontrollably. The crazy part is, that whole moment didn’t even make it into the final cut of the movie! We cried for a good four or five minutes, and after that, we just had to wrap for the day. We couldn’t revisit that emotional space. Honestly, I still have no idea what triggered it in either of us, but we both had a real breakdown.

I secretly hope we never find out exactly what led to that moment. It felt very personal for both of them, and I think it’s best to simply appreciate the raw emotion they shared without trying to analyze it further.

I just finished watching this, and it’s such a heartwarming story, especially seeing those two actors together! It also reminded me how fantastic the movie Creed really is. Can you believe it’s almost been ten years since it came out? If you’re thinking of revisiting it, it’s not on any of the usual streaming services right now, but you can definitely rent or buy it digitally, or even pick up a beautiful 4K or Blu-ray copy.
