A developer shared that a PlayStation 5 version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 was originally rejected by Xbox, before the company decided to release games on multiple platforms.
I was reading an interview with Jorg Neumann, the head of the game series, over on XDA, and he talked about getting the game onto the PS5. He even shared a cool story about how they originally pitched the idea to Sony way back when!
As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear about Flight Sim 2024! I remember when Flight Simulator 2020 took off on Xbox – it brought the game to so many new players, which was amazing. But honestly, the game became huge in terms of how much space it took up. So, the team really focused on using the cloud for the new version, which should make the install size much more reasonable. That’s a big win for everyone!
As the project developed, Neumann noticed the reduced file size opened up possibilities for releasing it on different systems. Around two and a half years ago, he proposed a version for PlayStation.
The idea wasn’t well-received. He explains, “It was likely ahead of its time, as I was turned down.”
Someone at Sony, a fan of flight simulators, believed it would be a good fit for their company. They contacted our President directly, who then told me that Sony was also interested, recalling a conversation we’d had about PlayStation a year earlier.
Neumann believes this move could lead to many more Xbox games being released on PlayStation, and the timing seems to support that idea.
After completing the game for PC and Xbox, the team started adapting it for PlayStation 5, focusing on performance and controller compatibility. They’re also continuing to develop a VR version, which is still in progress but planned for release.
This story is interesting because it really shows how rapidly Xbox evolved as a game publisher.
It’s unclear whether Sony’s efforts convinced the company to release the game on PS5, or if they were already planning to make many of their games available on multiple platforms.
If Neumann’s initial idea had been approved, the game might have been available on PS5 earlier.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is now available on PlayStation 5! Are you ready to take to the skies? Let us know what you think in the comments!
