The Rookie star Shawn Ashmore has teased his character’s upcoming season 9 storyline.
The TV series The Rookie stars Nathan Fillion and centers around John Nolan, a divorced man in his 40s who starts a new career with the Los Angeles Police Department. Over its eight seasons, the show has earned praise for its cast, exciting action, and thoughtful storylines. Actor Ryan Ashmore, known for his role in X-Men, plays Wesley Evers, who was a recurring character for the first two seasons and became a main character starting with season three.
Throughout the first eight seasons of The Rookie, Wesley transitioned from a defense attorney to an assistant district attorney. He even tried running for district attorney himself, but ultimately returned to private practice at his own law firm. Now, with season nine beginning production in July, actor Shawn Ashmore is hinting at what’s next for his character.
During an interview with Brandon Zachary from ScreenRant at Motor City Comic Con, Shawn Ashmore shared that he hadn’t received any scripts for the upcoming season of The Rookie, but he believes Wesley’s storyline will focus on his return to practicing law. This could create tension with the police, particularly with his wife, Angela. While he hasn’t seen the scripts for season 9, Ashmore understands the general direction the writers are planning for his character and may have even been involved in discussions about it.
Production on season 9 doesn’t begin until July, so I haven’t had a chance to read any scripts yet. However, I’m pretty sure Wesley’s storyline will focus on him returning to his career as a defense attorney, and it sounds like he might be starting a law firm with Del Monte.
With two district attorneys no longer working with the police, I expect to see them take a more challenging stance against our LAPD officers, and I’m actually excited about that. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Angela and Wesley, and the brief conflict we saw between Tim and Wesley in the finale showed us what’s possible. I think exploring that kind of tension will make the show even more interesting going forward.
Many fans consider Season 8 to be a high point for the show, so the creators are making changes to ensure Season 9 lives up to expectations. Along with previously announced cast updates for The Rookie, a new career path for Wesley will introduce exciting conflicts and challenges in his relationships.
It will be fascinating to see how things play out now that he’s defending the people the police arrested – including his wife. The tension Ashmore mentioned between Angela and Wesley is likely to resurface, potentially complicating his already fragile connection with Tim.
Wesley and Del Monte have contrasting backgrounds and work in different ways, but their differences actually make them a strong team. Their clashing styles could create interesting drama for Wesley’s character in season 9 of The Rookie.
