What is the Nex Playground, and is it available in the UK?

The Nex Playground surprised everyone by becoming the best-selling console over Black Friday, beating out both the Xbox Series S and X. It’s quickly become incredibly popular, but many are asking: what exactly is the Nex Playground, and can you buy it in the UK?

Since Sega stopped making consoles in 2001, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have been the three dominant companies in the gaming console market.

Honestly, everyone thought it would be nearly impossible for a new gaming platform to really take off these days. Most of us have built up huge collections of digital games on the platforms we already use, and a lot of younger players are more into mobile or PC gaming now. It felt like breaking into that market would be a huge challenge.

Even Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook and owner of Oculus VR, hasn’t been able to significantly gain ground in the gaming console market, despite its investment in virtual reality.

It’s no surprise many people are confused by the Nex Playground. However, as Chris Dring points out, it taps into a fondness for simple, plug-and-play gaming, particularly for parents who remember consoles like the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and original Xbox.

But as for what the Nex Playground is, and if it’s available in the UK, read on!

What is the Nex Playground?

The Nex Playground is a new motion-controlled console launching in December 2023. It’s similar to the Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360 Kinect – you play using your body movements, without needing to hold any controllers.

It uses artificial intelligence to track your movements, allowing you to play games like Fruit Ninja and a variety of fun, simple party games that are quick to learn and enjoy.

The game lets you customize how sensitive the controls are, which is great for players with limited movement. Unlike other systems, you don’t need to buy extra, often costly, adaptive controllers to make it work.

The controller is super basic – just a simple remote to get around the menus. Honestly, if you’ve ever turned on a TV in the last half-century, you’ll pick it up instantly. It’s that easy!

Plus, it’s really compact – just a 3-inch cube – so you can easily store it or place it under a TV.

Now that the Nex Playground has been available for two years, its game library has grown. You can find new titles like Bluey: Bust-a-Move, and it also comes with pre-installed games including Fruit Ninja, Go Keeper, Starri, Party Fowl, and Whac-a-Mole.

The Play Pass subscription is constantly getting new games, and with a price of just $19.99 per month and a simple interface, it’s no surprise the Nex Playground has become increasingly popular in recent years.

Is the Nex Playground available in the UK?

Unfortunately, the Nex Playground is not available in the UK.

Right now, people wanting to buy it have to order from Amazon US, which can add extra costs for shipping and import taxes. There’s no news yet about it becoming available in the UK, but with how well it’s doing, it probably won’t be long before it does.

After US taxes are added (since the listed price doesn’t include them), the price in the UK will likely be around £199.99, with subscription costs converted to British pounds.

Once we know more, or an official announcement is made, we will update you accordingly.
