Buffy fans received disappointing news when Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on social media that Hulu had cancelled the planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The new series, which would have starred Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the next Slayer, Nova, was scrapped after Hulu expressed concerns about the pilot episode directed by Chloé Zhao. The project, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, will no longer move forward.
As a lifelong fan, it’s incredibly frustrating that we may never get the full picture of why Hulu pulled the plug on the reboot. Honestly, it feels like this effectively kills off the entire Buffy universe. It’s especially disheartening because even the comics and novels had already wound down, seemingly to make space for this new show. Now, I’m left wondering what the future holds for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Is there any chance Disney and Hulu will reconsider and give this iconic franchise another shot?
A Buffy Revival is Still on the Cards – But There’s a Catch
It appears the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is no longer moving forward, and a recent social media post from Ryan Kiera Armstrong might be the only glimpse we get of the pilot. This is especially disappointing given Armstrong’s promising career and strong performance in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. According to Deadline, Hulu considered revising the pilot, but is now exploring the possibility of rebooting the franchise at a later time.
The biggest obstacle to a Buffy revival isn’t the idea itself, but Sarah Michelle Gellar’s reluctance. For years, she’s turned down any attempts to bring the show back, stating she hadn’t heard a compelling reason to revisit the character. Recently, director Chloé Zhao did present her with a vision that almost changed her mind, but even that wasn’t enough to secure her commitment. Given Gellar’s past resistance, it seems unlikely she’ll agree to participate in any future revival attempts.
If Sarah Michelle Gellar is willing to return, Hulu has a couple of options. They could create another show centered on Buffy, but relying too much on nostalgia, as seen with franchises like Star Wars, doesn’t usually work well long-term. A stronger idea would be to follow the format of New Sunnydale by introducing a new Slayer who stars alongside Gellar. This would attract both longtime fans and new viewers, though it might feel like a step down after the original New Sunnydale ended.
It’s Time to Bring Buffy Back in Other Mediums Too

While the Buffy TV show ended in 2003, the story didn’t stop there. It continued in comic books, and a recent reboot by Boom! Studios was particularly well-done. These comics created a sprawling ‘Slayerverse’ similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse, allowing them to reimagine Buffy for modern audiences and even explore storylines that connected to the original series. This approach was clever, offering something for both longtime fans and new readers, but a similar strategy might not work on television – viewers are really hoping to see Sarah Michelle Gellar reprise her role.
As a big fan, it was really disappointing to see the Buffy comics end when Boom! let the license expire at the end of 2024. Since then, there hasn’t been a single new Buffy comic book, which honestly felt like the whole universe just… stopped. It wasn’t just the comics, either. A lot of really great novels came out in the early 2020s, and then everything went silent. Most of us figured Disney was putting Buffy on the back burner to make room for a potential TV revival, but it’s been quiet for too long.
This situation puts Buffy in a really tough spot. Despite how well-known the show is, Buffy currently has less visibility than ever before. There haven’t been any new comics or novels in over a year, just one audiobook looking back at the past. The planned revival has been cancelled, and it’s unlikely to happen again. Things are looking particularly bleak for the Slayer right now.
Hulu (& Disney) Need to Bring Buffy Back
Reviving Buffy won’t be easy. Fans are likely to be cautious after previous attempts at bringing the show back failed. While a compelling new idea is important, it might be hard to move beyond simply introducing a new Slayer. Plus, getting Sarah Michelle Gellar to rejoin the cast could prove difficult. Even with a strong concept, the show would need to attract both longtime fans and a new audience.
To bring Buffy back successfully, the franchise needs a strong relaunch, starting with a bigger presence in other media. Disney could benefit from promoting Buffy novels and comics, and even exploring the multiverse concept introduced in the Boom! comics. Interestingly, recent novels – especially Kendare Blake’s Buffy: The Next Generation trilogy – demonstrated how easily the role of the Slayer could be passed on to a new character. Establishing a ‘Slayerverse’ would allow these stories to exist outside the main canon, paving the way for a revival without causing continuity issues.
The cancellation of ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’ is really disappointing for fans. However, considering Buffy has ‘died’ on screen before, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s over for good. It will probably be a while before we see anything new, though, as creating content – in any format – takes time.
