The series The Mandalorian and Grogu mainly focuses on Din Djarin and Grogu, but also features several familiar faces from the Star Wars universe. Returning characters include Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son first seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Zeb Orrelios, a key figure from Star Wars Rebels.
However, the movie doesn’t feature many cameos – a deliberate choice, likely made to avoid criticism of excessive fan service, which the previous Star Wars sequels were often accused of. While many major characters like Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano don’t appear, here are seven of the most notable ones and their whereabouts during the film’s events.
Luke Skywalker

As we’ve discussed, Luke Skywalker isn’t in the film, probably because The Mandalorian and Grogu aimed to be a fresh start, separate from the Skywalker story. Bringing Luke into the picture would have gone against that goal. Viewers of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett already understand the reason for his absence.
As we see in The Book of Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker was well into the process of constructing his Jedi Temple and finding new students. For a short time, it looked like Grogu would be his first, but Grogu ultimately chose to return to Din Djarin and be raised as a Mandalorian instead.
Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano won’t appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is understandable. We last saw Ahsoka in her own series, Ahsoka. While the exact timelines aren’t clear, it appears the events of Ahsoka happened before the start of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The season finale of Ahsoka revealed that Ahsoka and Sabine Wren are currently stranded on the planet Peridea. It’s unknown when, or even if, they’ll be able to return to the main Star Wars galaxy, but this explains why they haven’t appeared in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Thrawn

Thrawn was last seen in the Ahsoka series, but his storyline ended differently than Sabine and Ahsoka’s. They were stranded on Peridea, while Thrawn successfully returned to the main Star Wars galaxy. Because of this, many fans thought he might appear as the villain in The Mandalorian and Grogu, but he isn’t featured in the film.
It’s surprising Thrawn wasn’t involved in the recent story, considering Din Djarin was tasked with tracking down remaining Imperial officers. Thrawn would definitely have been a prime target, and this opens up exciting possibilities for the future. Maybe he’s successfully staying hidden from the New Republic, secretly growing his power and preparing for a bigger comeback.
Han Solo

Han Solo, like many key characters from the original Star Wars films, doesn’t appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu, and that’s understandable. Given that Han wasn’t involved in politics or the New Republic, his absence is less surprising than it would have been for Luke Skywalker.
Han Solo had a history as a smuggler, and the later Star Wars films showed he quickly fell back into that life after the events of the original trilogy. While it’s possible he wasn’t actively smuggling during the time of The Mandalorian, he may have been focused on raising his young son, Ben Solo, before Ben went to train with his Uncle Luke. However, stories in the Star Wars comics suggest Ben felt neglected by his parents, making it more likely Han was still involved in smuggling.
Leia Organa

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was a little disappointed that Leia Organa didn’t show up in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Of the original trio – Luke, Han, and Leia – I honestly thought she had the best chance of making a cameo. Considering how involved she was with the New Republic after the Empire fell, it would have made perfect sense for Din Djarin to run into her at some point. It just felt like a missed opportunity!
However, Star Wars has been very reluctant to replace the actress who played Leia, and doing so would have created problems with how The Mandalorian and Grogu fit into the larger Skywalker story. So, it’s not surprising she doesn’t appear in the movie. It seems she was likely occupied with her responsibilities in the New Republic.
Boba Fett

Boba Fett was already linked to The Mandalorian series, and some viewers felt the two shows, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, were too closely connected. Despite this, Boba Fett doesn’t make an appearance in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
One reason for this could be that The Book of Boba Fett wasn’t very successful – many consider it the worst Star Wars TV show. However, the show ended with Boba Fett firmly in charge of Tatooine, as the ruler of Mos Espa. This explains why he might be too busy running things to appear in the new movie.
Ezra Bridger

Ezra Bridger, a character from the series Rebels and most recently seen in Ahsoka, doesn’t appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu. While not entirely unexpected, it was a possibility, especially since, like Grand Admiral Thrawn, Ezra returned to the main Star Wars galaxy at the end of Ahsoka. Zeb Orrelios’s involvement in the new movie also led some fans to believe Ezra might make an appearance.
Even though Ezra wasn’t in The Mandalorian and Grogu, he’s scheduled to return in season 2 of Ahsoka, and there’s a chance he might appear in another Star Wars story in the future.
