Where was Two Weeks in August filmed?

The new BBC drama, Two Weeks in August, features Jessica Raine, Damien Molony, Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Pinnock, Leila Farzad, and Hugh Skinner. It’s about a group of friends who get together for a vacation in the Mediterranean.

The story immediately establishes a sense of unease, which quickly escalates when a secret kiss happens. Following this, Raine’s character, Zoe, starts pursuing what she truly wants, leading to complications for everyone involved.

Given that the show is about a holiday meant to feel like paradise, it’s filmed in some beautiful, sunny locations over its eight episodes. But where does the story take place, and where were those scenes actually shot?

Read on for everything you need to know about the locations used to shoot Two Weeks in August.

Where is Two Weeks in August set?

Catherine Shepherd’s novel, Two Weeks in August, is significantly located in Greece, a setting that holds particular importance for the author.

Shepherd told TopMob he got the idea for the show from wanting to write a story about a group vacation, and he specifically envisioned it taking place in Greece.

The idea for this story came from my own experiences with group vacations – I’ve been on a lot of them, both enjoyable and not so much. I often visited Greece with my family when I was growing up and in my twenties, and one particular memory really stuck with me. We were in Corfu, having a lovely day, when we witnessed something unsettling. From across the water, we could see Albania and observed gunfire – people were shooting at each other.

It was distant enough that we weren’t at risk, but I found it darkly humorous that we just carried on with dinner as if nothing was happening. It felt like a perfect illustration of modern life – attempting to enjoy ourselves despite everything that’s going wrong.

It’s fascinating how people really want to escape and believe they deserve time to disconnect from their problems. This definitely resonates with me – while I was working on this project, I was actually planning a trip to Greece and browsing online forums for travel tips.

These questions are often both sad and funny because people are genuinely worried about how difficult things are politically on the island. While it’s unpleasant to bring it up, it’s honest, and nobody wants their vacation ruined by serious problems.

Where was Two Weeks in August filmed?

Despite being set in Greece, Two Weeks in August was actually filmed in Malta.

So, I was reading an interview with Shepherd, and apparently, filming in Greece just wasn’t going to happen. But they ended up switching to Malta, and he says it actually turned out really well – like, even better than Greece would have been. It’s always cool when a plan B ends up being a win!

Before the show launched, Shepherd described Malta as a remarkably beautiful location that plays a key role in the story. He explained that the narrative centers around the search for a perfect escape – a paradise where people can leave their troubles behind.

As a critic, I can tell you this location is stunning. The island itself feels like another character in the film – incredibly beautiful, but also with a raw, almost dangerous edge. It’s a place steeped in history, reminiscent of Greece, and offers a truly diverse landscape. Filming here has been a dream, but don’t mistake the beauty for safety; this island won’t be offering our characters any easy escapes when things go wrong. It’s a harsh environment, and they’ll have to rely on themselves.

Damien Molony, who plays Dan, shared that filming began in Dwejra Bay. Jessica Raine, who stars as Zoe, said she was incredibly cold while filming in Malta in early March, even though she’d previously filmed in Iceland!

We shot a birthday party scene early in production where everyone was wearing summer clothes, but we were all secretly bundled up in thermal underwear to stay warm. The set was full of hot water bottles!

At first, no one believed me when I told my family it was really cold where we were filming. Luckily, the weather improved. The scenery was incredible, and filming on the island of Gozo was a highlight.

In a conversation with TopMob, Molony described the island as a remarkable and historically rich place, noting that many members of their team were Maltese and incredibly skilled.

The location is a popular choice for big-budget films, so we worked with a very skilled and experienced crew. The island itself is stunning, with fantastic weather. When we weren’t filming, there was a rich history to discover and enjoy.

Two Weeks in August will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 9pm on Saturday 23 May 2026.
