Fans of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton are buzzing about a big mystery in Season 4: who is the new Lady Whistledown? After Penelope Featherington stopped writing the gossip column, someone else took over, and the show is keeping their identity a secret. While Season 4 hasn’t revealed the new writer, viewers are already analyzing clues and debating which character is most likely to be behind the sharp-tongued observations.
Showrunner Jess Brownell was thrilled to discuss the recent twist, especially because it was created just for the show and wasn’t part of the original books. As she explained on Bridgerton: The Official Podcast (via Tudum), the identity of Whistledown was already known from the books, so they couldn’t keep that reveal a mystery for long. Now, however, they can surprise viewers with unexpected developments. Brownell also highlighted that this new direction allows them to explore female empowerment in a more meaningful way. She noted that the historical period offered women limited choices and control, making it powerful to showcase women who actively sought to improve their circumstances and broaden the scope of female experiences within the show.
Considering all of this, who are the most likely candidates to be the next Lady Whistledown? We’ve narrowed it down to eight possibilities, and we’ve ranked them from least to most probable.
8) Agatha Danbury

Let’s consider Lady Danbury – she initially seems like the most likely candidate. As one of the most intelligent and perceptive characters in Bridgerton, she’s always been strategically minded and fully aware of what’s happening around her. That alone seems like a strong argument. However, there’s a problem: Agatha Danbury has always been powerful because she operates openly. Making her Lady Whistledown would require changing her character – turning someone who confidently takes charge into someone secretly writing in the shadows.
Despite this, it’s still possible she’s Whistledown. By the end of Season 4, Lady Danbury gains her freedom from the expectations of high society, which could allow her to operate behind the scenes. She’s also incredibly perceptive and skilled at understanding people – a key trait for Whistledown. However, this theory is probably the least likely. Making her Whistledown would diminish the strength of her character and what makes her so interesting.
7) Cressida Penwood

Cressida returns to Bridgerton as Lord Penwood’s wife, and naturally, everyone wonders if she might try to become Lady Whistledown again – she’s already attempted it once! Given her ambition and understanding of how controlling information equals social power, it seems likely. Her past grievances with high society could easily drive her to try again, this time with a smarter, more calculated approach. It makes sense logically, but it remains to be seen if the show will take that storyline in that direction.
Her previous attempt to become Whistledown was a public disaster. Bringing that storyline back would need a significant show of growth in her maturity, patience, and understanding of social dynamics – something we didn’t really see in Season 4. It also risks revisiting a conflict that’s already been resolved, and repeating it now would feel stale instead of innovative. Ultimately, her main goal has always been about gaining attention, not about genuine observation or intelligence. However, she’s already connected to the idea of being Whistledown, making it a lingering possibility.
6) Araminta Gun

Araminta would be a perfect fit as the new Lady Whistledown, considering her history as the main antagonist in Season 4. She’s proven herself to be cunning, driven, and skilled at damaging reputations – she even seems eager to get back at Sophie and the Bridgerton family. Beyond that, she has the social influence and understanding of public opinion needed to control information and shape narratives, which are essential qualities for Lady Whistledown.
However, that predictability is actually the issue. Araminta seems too obvious as the new Whistledown, and Bridgerton usually avoids such predictable twists. The show’s creator has also suggested the reveal would be a slow burn, building a mystery over time. Since Araminta has been presented as a clear villain from the beginning, revealing her as Whistledown wouldn’t be a clever or satisfying surprise – it would feel completely expected.
5) Brimsley

The idea that Brimsley is secretly Lady Whistledown is surprisingly believable, especially considering how Season 4 played out. He’s incredibly devoted to Queen Charlotte and is always present, quietly observing everything that happens within high society. Because he blends into the background, he’d be perfectly positioned to collect gossip without anyone suspecting a thing. Given the Queen’s disappointment with the lack of new rumors this season, it’s easy to imagine Brimsley taking on the role of Lady Whistledown just to keep her amused.
Lady Whistledown has always represented female strength in a world that tried to hold women back, so revealing a male author would fundamentally alter the show’s core message. Also, Brimsley’s position within the palace walls gives him a limited perspective, while Lady Whistledown’s writing clearly comes from someone who moves through all levels of society. While it’s not out of the question that Brimsley could be Whistledown, the story would need a compelling reason to make that reveal believable.
4) Eloise Bridgerton

Eloise is a divisive figure among fans, but she’s also a strong contender for the role of Lady Whistledown. Her passion for writing and reading, combined with her rebellious nature and keen intellect, make her a natural fit. She’s socially adept, giving her access to valuable information, and her connection to the printing world through Theo Sharpe is a major advantage. Plus, she previously dedicated herself to exposing Lady Whistledown, which makes the idea of her becoming Lady Whistledown – and doing it her own way – incredibly compelling. Essentially, her personality and skills perfectly match the character’s requirements.
Season 4 strengthens the idea that Eloise is maturing, especially in how she understands relationships and respects other women’s decisions – her support of Posy demonstrates this well. However, this creates a bit of a contradiction. Given her past conflict with Penelope, it would be ironic if Eloise started acting the same way. While it could be a powerful and satisfying twist, it might also feel like a contrived plot device designed to prolong the central mystery.
3) Mrs. Varley & Portia Featherington

Things really start to get intriguing here. Brownell suggests that the new Lady Whistledown might not be a single person, which makes Varley and Portia strong possibilities. Varley has access to all the best gossip, moving among the servants and hidden areas of the Ton. Portia, having expertly navigated society by controlling her own reputation, understands how powerful gossip can be. Together, they’d have both the information and the drive to continue the scandal sheet. After the reveal of Lady Whistledown, Portia even became fixated on Penelope’s writing and tried to meddle, while Season 4 demonstrated Varley’s skill at gathering information.
They had a falling out and were distant for a time, but ultimately reconciled in a meaningful way – as equals, like true partners, rather than one being in charge. This resolution feels logical, with hints throughout the series and a history of unpredictable behavior from the Featherington family supporting it. However, while satisfying, it might be more of a clever twist than a groundbreaking change for the show. It would be enjoyable, but perhaps not the bold new direction this season seems to be building towards.
2) Hyacinth Bridgerton

Hyacinth has often been overlooked, which makes her a compelling character – especially since the latest season allowed us to see more of her personality. She’s inquisitive, perceptive, and intelligent, and she’s always been open about her interest in Lady Whistledown. Considering she’s still a young teenager who constantly tries to get into places she shouldn’t (like when she disguised herself for Cressida’s ball), has a bit of a rebellious side, and is naturally drawn to gossip – just like in the books – she seems like a really good fit for the role.
Witnessing Francesca’s sadness after John’s death made her think carefully about her own life and future. She realized she wanted to understand herself better before considering marriage, showing a surprising level of maturity. She was also upset that Penelope stopped writing as Whistledown, feeling that her own debut into society wouldn’t be documented. If the show wants to prolong the mystery of Whistledown’s identity, Hyacinth would be a clever choice – unexpected, yet believable. However, because she’s still so young, and another suspect seems more likely at this moment, she doesn’t currently rank as highly as that other possibility.
1) Alice Mondrich

Alice is the most likely candidate to take over as Lady Whistledown because she naturally resolves plot issues in a believable way. Since she was introduced in Bridgerton, her importance has grown, and Season 4 gives her even more influence as one of Queen Charlotte’s ladies-in-waiting. This position is key because it allows her close access to the inner workings of high society. As someone who isn’t a lifelong member of the Ton, she offers a unique and valuable perspective – exactly what Lady Whistledown needs. Furthermore, Alice has consistently been shown as self-assured and collected.
Alice impressed the Queen and gained her trust, consistently offering help to Sophie and Benedict when it counted. She’s reliable and composed, which is why Lady Danbury felt comfortable entrusting her with court duties when she took a step back. Alice even expressed her desire to continue serving the Queen, as long as she felt she had a valuable role. Beyond simply amusing the Queen, Alice has a genuine ability to gather information, a keen eye for detail to understand it, and a backstory that makes her involvement feel natural. Crucially, her potential role isn’t immediately obvious, preventing the reveal from feeling predictable, but it also doesn’t come across as arbitrary.
