The Eurovision Song Contest has received a lot of criticism for letting Israel participate this year, given the current war happening in Gaza.

I’m really disappointed to see several countries are choosing not to participate in the contest this year. It’s because the organization running it, the European Broadcasting Union, decided not to exclude Israel, and a lot of us feel that’s wrong. It’s a tough situation, but many are standing in solidarity by not competing.

I was really interested to hear what came out of the EBU meeting last December. They decided to put some new rules in place to prevent governments or outside groups from unfairly pushing certain songs and swaying how people vote – it’s a great move for a fair contest, in my opinion. What I also noticed was that they didn’t actually vote on whether Israel would be allowed to participate, which felt like a separate issue altogether.

The EBU announced that most of its members decided another vote on whether to participate wasn’t necessary. They confirmed that the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest will go ahead as scheduled, with extra safety measures added.

After that announcement, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland all stated they would not be competing in Eurovision this year.

Ireland’s public broadcaster, RTÉ, has decided not to participate in this year’s contest, stating that it doesn’t feel right to do so considering the tragic loss of life and ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which continues to endanger civilians.

As a viewer, I understand the BBC backs the EBU’s decision. They’ve explained it’s about making sure everyone follows the competition rules and keeping things fair and inclusive, which I think is important.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final will take place on Saturday 16 May 2026.
