Who is Monroe? Meet France’s Eurovision 2026 entry

France is sending 17-year-old singer Monroe to represent them at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. She’s one of the youngest artists competing this year.

France automatically qualifies for the Eurovision grand final each year because it’s one of the major contributing countries, known as the Big Five. However, this doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to win.

As a huge Eurovision fan, I’ve always known France consistently does well, but it’s been a long time since they actually won – 1977, to be exact! Everyone’s wondering if 2026 might finally be the year they break that streak.

Here’s everything you need to know about Monroe ahead of this year’s performance.

The Eurovision Song Contest has received a lot of criticism for letting Israel compete this year, given the current war happening in Gaza.

Several countries are choosing not to participate in the contest this year because the organization in charge, the European Broadcasting Union, decided against banning Israel from competing.

In December 2025, the EBU held a meeting where members voted to establish rules preventing governments or outside groups from unfairly boosting certain songs to sway voting results. However, they did not vote on whether Israel would be allowed to participate.

The European Broadcasting Union announced that most of its members decided another vote on whether to continue with the Eurovision Song Contest wasn’t necessary. They confirmed that the 2026 contest will go ahead as scheduled, with extra safety measures in place.

After this announcement, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland all stated they would not be competing in Eurovision this year.

Ireland’s public broadcaster, RTÉ, has decided not to participate in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, citing the devastating situation in Gaza and the ongoing risk to civilian lives as the reason.

The BBC, the UK broadcaster for the competition, has voiced its support for the EBU’s decision. In a statement, the BBC explained that this action is about upholding the competition’s rules and ensuring inclusivity.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final will take place on Saturday 16 May 2026.
