A new horror movie is a huge hit at the box office, far exceeding expectations and earning almost 100 times its production cost. While going to the movies is great for all kinds of films, horror movies really stand out. There’s something special about experiencing the thrills and scares with an audience – it’s hard to replicate that at home.
Horror movies often quickly become box office successes, consistently ranking among the top earners daily, weekly, monthly, and annually. Because they’re usually made with smaller budgets, a horror film that gains international popularity can become one of the year’s biggest hits.
Last year, films like Weapons and Sinners were huge successes. Over the past few years, a strong appetite for new horror movies has helped titles like Longlegs, Talk to Me, and Smile become major hits – and even launch new franchises. That success has continued into 2026, with Sam Raimi’s Send Help and Markiplier’s Iron Lung already proving popular with audiences.
Although The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently the most popular movie in cinemas, a low-budget supernatural horror film called Obsession is truly resonating with audiences. Director Curry Barker made the film for under $1 million, and it’s gaining popularity as more people discover it.
Obsession Has Become A Massive Box Office Hit (#1 Horror Worldwide Right Now)
The new horror film Obsession, released by Blumhouse and Focus Features on May 15th, is performing strongly at the box office. After just two weeks in theaters, it has earned $79 million globally, with $58.5 million of that coming from the United States.
Following a strong opening weekend with $17.1 million in domestic ticket sales, excitement around Obsession grew. The movie topped the box office charts from Monday, May 18th, to Thursday, May 21st. Although it moved to second place after that, the horror film still performed exceptionally well during its second weekend.
I was really surprised by how well Obsession did! It actually made more money in its second weekend than it did when it first came out – a huge 30% jump, bringing its total to $22.4 million. Over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, that number went up to $28.2 million! It was enough to make it the top-performing movie, except for The Mandalorian and Grogu, which was still doing incredibly well.
Currently, Obsession is the most successful horror film. Its second weekend earnings surpassed the opening weekend of Paramount’s Passenger ($8.7 million), the second weekend of Amazon’s Is God Is ($886,000), and the fourth weekend of Hokum ($350,000).
With only 11 days in release, Obsession is just beginning what could be a very successful run in theaters.
Obsession’s Box Office Is Fueled By Excellent Word Of Mouth
Many factors are contributing to the success of Obsession, quickly becoming a major hit this year. The movie is clearly connecting with audiences, and it’s receiving excellent reviews – it currently holds a 95% approval rating from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
People are loving Obsession because it’s more than just a scary movie. While it definitely delivers the thrills and scares horror fans expect, it also includes moments of humor. This balance keeps the movie entertaining even when it gets dark and disturbing, making for a fun viewing experience.
Inde Navarrette, the film’s biggest new star, perfectly embodies both the funny and frightening aspects of the movie. Her skill at balancing these tones is a major reason why Obsession is so effective. It’s easy to see why viewers are enthusiastically praising her online – it makes others even more eager to see what she does.
Since there aren’t any other horror movies creating a similar level of excitement, it’s not surprising that Obsession is currently the horror film everyone is talking about. The real test will be next weekend when Backrooms from A24 comes out. Because both films were made by creators who started on YouTube, they’re likely to appeal to a similar audience, creating even more competition than usual.
How Big Of A Success Obsession Really Is
Now that Obsession is clearly a hit in theaters, everyone’s wondering just how well it will ultimately do. To become the year’s biggest horror movie and surpass Scream VII‘s $207 million earnings, it needs to continue performing strongly for weeks to come.
Even with several other big horror films planned for release this year, trying to become the highest-grossing horror movie isn’t a realistic goal, and wasn’t expected by the filmmakers. The movie is already a huge success and is on track to be one of the biggest hits of 2026, across all genres.
With its current success, Obsession is expected to easily surpass $100 million at the box office. This would make it more financially successful than the latest film from a renowned director like Sam Raimi, or even the recent reboot of The Mummy. It’s on track to become the highest-grossing original horror film from Hollywood since Weapons.
Since 2020, only a few horror films have earned more at the box office than the current total of Obsession. Those films include Send Help, Weapons, Sinners, Longlegs, Talk to Me, The Black Phone, M3GAN, and Smile. Obsession is already a top 10 hit, guaranteeing its place as a successful horror film regardless of its final earnings.
While not every low-budget horror film becomes a blockbuster, they’re often Hollywood’s most consistent source of surprisingly successful and affordable genre hits. The impressive financial return of Obsession perfectly illustrates this point.
Studios should consider making at least one original horror movie each year – you never know when you’ll find a hit. With some established franchises losing popularity, the success of films like Obsession shows there’s a real demand for fresh, new horror. Hopefully, this will inspire studios to take chances on original stories, support up-and-coming filmmakers like Curry Barker, and deliver more of what audiences are craving.
