Yul Vazquez, known for his role in the popular Apple TV+ show Severance, has spoken about why he wasn’t in season two and if he plans to come back in the future.
In the first season of Severance, Zach Cherry plays Petey Kilmer, a former Lumon employee who makes Mark Scout (Adam Scott) aware that something unsettling is going on at the company and with the severance process itself. Petey helps Mark begin to uncover the truth, but he tragically dies after undergoing the reintegration procedure—which combines his ‘innie’ and ‘outie’ personalities—due to its dangerous side effects. He doesn’t return for season 2.
During an interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant at SXSW, actor John Vazquez discussed the possibility of returning to Apple TV+’s Severance. When asked about a potential return, he hinted that anything could happen, saying, “You never know with Severance.” Vazquez also revealed he understood his role was mainly to kickstart the story for Mark and introduce the show’s central mysteries. You can find his full comments below.
I had a clear role on that show. I knew exactly what I needed to do and when to start, and then I just let things unfold.
Though Petey was crucial at the start of Severance, the story has moved past his arc. Mark focused on rescuing his outside self’s wife, Gemma, while his ‘innie’ aligned with Helly. Considering these events, plus comments from the creator about Petey fulfilling his role in the story and his ultimate death, it seems improbable he’ll reappear, though not entirely impossible.
The show Severance has used flashbacks to reveal details about Petey’s life before and during his time at Lumon, and more could appear in future seasons if they serve a purpose. Some fans also theorize that Lumon might be able to bring people back to life, but it’s currently unclear if that’s possible within the show’s universe.
Don’t expect Severance to return anytime soon – filming hasn’t even begun on the next season. While Ben Stiller, the director and executive producer, hoped to shorten the gap between seasons after the almost three-year wait for season 2, it looks like we’ll likely have to wait at least two more years. Season 2 finished in March 2025, so a premiere in 2027 is the earliest possible timeframe.
As a huge fan of Severance, I’m already bracing myself for the next season. Knowing that show, it’s guaranteed to throw some serious curveballs at us. Honestly, part of me is still holding out hope for Petey to reappear – if the writers can make it feel earned, of course. It would be amazing!
