Why Blue Ivy, Sunday Rose Attended Met Gala Despite Age Limit

The 2026 Met Gala was a family affair.

Beyoncé and Nicole Kidman, who co-hosted the event, both brought their daughters along. Beyoncé was accompanied by her 14-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, and Nicole Kidman’s plus one was her 17-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, whom she shares with ex-husband Keith Urban.

However, their attendance actually broke the rules, as the Met Gala is generally reserved for people 18 and older.

The rule started at the 2018 Gala. At that time, Maddie Ziegler, who was 15 years old, told The Hollywood Reporter she couldn’t attend because of the age limit.

The event organizer also stated that the event is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18.

Before recent changes, some of the youngest people to attend the Met Gala included Jaden Smith and Willow Smith, who first appeared in 2016 at ages 17 and 15. Hailee Steinfeld was also a young attendee, making her debut in 2011 when she was 15 years old.

Although Hailee Steinfeld also attended, Elle Fanning still holds the record for being the youngest person to ever attend the Met Gala, as she was only 13 years old at her first appearance.

Okay, so I’ve been tracking this forever, and it’s finally clear! Ever since 2018, the only way younger fans seem to be getting in is if their parents come with them. It’s like, you have to bring a chaperone just to have a chance! I’ve noticed it over and over, and it’s so frustrating, but that’s how it is now, apparently.

Which is how Blue and Sunday were able to appear at this year’s “Costume Art” exhibit fundraiser. 

Blue wore a cream-colored outfit – a dress and jacket – with silver high heels designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli for Balenciaga. She stood with her parents, including Jay-Z.

For Sunday’s look, I absolutely loved her choice! She wore a stunning pink gown, and the detail was incredible – it was completely covered in delicate, beaded flowers. It was a Dior design by the brilliant Jonathan Anderson, and it really made a statement.

Explaining her outfit choice to Vogue, the young star said she aimed to represent something blossoming, as it was her debut at the Met Gala.

And Nicole concurred: “I have a springtime blossoming girl here.”
