James Gunn surprised fans by leaving David Denman’s Captain Triumph out of the Peacemaker Season 2 finale, and he’s now explained why. The DC Studios co-CEO, known for directing the Guardians of the Galaxy, recently discussed his decision not to make Chris Smith’s brother the main villain this season, and also hinted at what’s next for the character in the broader DC Universe.
James Gunn explains why Captain Triumph wasn’t Peacemaker Season 2’s villain
In an interview with Deadline, James Gunn explained that although the events of Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 7 turned Keith Smith, also known as Captain Triumph, into a true villain, he hasn’t yet decided what’s next for Peacemaker’s brother.
The filmmaker believes they may have created a villainous character, but feels the overarching narrative of redemption is more deliberate and important than any specific details about the character themselves.
James Gunn has confirmed that Captain Triumph, also known as Keith, will appear in future DC Universe projects, though the specifics of his storyline are still being developed. Gunn explained he has ideas for the character but needs to figure out how to integrate them effectively, especially considering the complexities of interdimensional travel within the DCU. He knows what he wants to happen with Keith, but isn’t ready to share details yet.
David Denman played Captain Triumph, who first appeared in the opening episode of Peacemaker Season 2. When John Cena’s character, Chris Smith, accidentally travels to an alternate Earth ruled by Nazis, he discovers his brother is still alive there. Chris ultimately kills his alternate-reality brother, which draws the attention of the villain, Keith. Later, in the second-to-last episode of the season, Peacemaker and his team fight Keith, badly wounding him. Despite his injuries, Keith somehow lives, hinting at a possible rematch with his interdimensional brother in the future.
