Why Nicole Kidman Hugs Daughters Sunday and Faith for 2 Minutes a Day

Nicole Kidman’s daughters just go with their mom’s daily rituals.

Nicole Kidman, who has two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15, with her ex-husband Keith Urban, recently shared that her daughters are required to give her a two-minute hug each day.

Nicole confessed to Hoda Kotb during a live event in Philadelphia on April 18th that her daughters would likely be upset with her for admitting this, but she insists they need to hug her for two minutes each day, according to People magazine.

She explained that hugging releases helpful chemicals in the body, and recommends getting about two minutes of hugs each day.

The Big Little Lies star described parenting teenagers as “amazing,” and shared that she has a very close relationship with her daughters, saying the three of them talk about everything.

She explained it as someone inviting you to sit on their bed when you’re feeling down. You go in, completely tired, and just listen. Then, she always asks, ‘Do you want my advice, or do you just need to let it all out?’

Usually, her teens just need a listening ear.

I mostly just receive unsolicited advice,” the 58-year-old said with a chuckle, “about 90% of the time.

Nicole, who is a mother to Bella, 33, and Connor, 31, with her ex-husband Tom Cruise, also mentioned that she learned a lot about being a mom from her own mother, Janelle Ann Kidman.

As for what lessons Janelle—who died in 2024—passed down to the Bewitched star?

You know, Nicole once told me something her mom said to her, and it completely stuck with me. Her mom basically told her to never let anyone crush her dreams. It’s so powerful because her mom grew up in a time where she wasn’t allowed to pursue the career she really wanted – it just wasn’t an option back then! It makes everything Nicole does even more inspiring, knowing that background.

She not only raised us and supported my father, but also helped him earn his PhD. It’s remarkable, considering she was very intelligent herself but never had the opportunity to get her own degree.

Honestly, Janelle is a total angel! She’s the reason Nicole even kept acting! Can you believe Nicole was thinking of quitting back in 2008? She’d just gone through a really tough divorce from Keith in January, and Janelle talked her out of leaving everything behind. I’m so grateful to Janelle for that – we’d have missed out on so much if Nicole hadn’t kept going!

Nicole shared that she had relocated to Nashville and was expecting a baby. Shortly after her daughter, Sunday Rose, was born, she decided to retire from her career.

My mother encouraged me not to quit. She reminded me that I’d been passionate about this since childhood, saying it was a part of who I am, and I’m so grateful she did.

Nicole’s parents instilled in her the importance of defending others, a lesson she considers the most valuable thing they ever taught her.

She believes being raised in a family dedicated to social justice and helping others has positively influenced her daughters.
