Roland Emmerich’s 1994 film, Stargate, sparked a huge franchise with its story of a portal allowing instant travel to other planets, combining ancient Egyptian beliefs with science fiction. The movie was a big success, leading MGM to create a large television series based on it. Stargate SG-1 followed the adventures of Earth’s main exploration teams for over ten years, and after a break following Stargate Universe, the series is being brought back with a new show currently in development at Prime Video.
The 1994 movie Stargate featured Colonel Jack O’Neil, played by Kurt Russell, as the leader of the expedition. When the Air Force revived the program as the TV series Stargate SG-1, the role was taken over by Richard Dean Anderson, who spelled the name slightly differently – Colonel Jack O’Neill, with two “L”s. This change is even addressed as a joke within the show itself. Although the series treats the two characters as distinct, the switch happened simply because Kurt Russell chose not to reprise his role for the television series.
Why Didn’t Kurt Russell Return For Stargate SG-1?

I always understood why Kurt Russell turned down the lead in that sci-fi series back in the late 90s. He was a huge movie star at the time, and committing to a weekly TV show would have basically put his film career on hold. A full season of television is a massive undertaking – around 22 episodes that take almost a year to film, and he just didn’t want to be tied to one role for that long. He even said in 2006, even after the show became a hit, that he didn’t regret his decision! Honestly, looking at his film work during the late 90s and early 2000s – movies like Escape from L.A., Breakdown, Vanilla Sky, and Miracle – it’s easy to see why. He was clearly making the right moves for his career.
A change in actors could have easily doomed Stargate SG-1, but ultimately, casting Richard Dean Anderson was crucial for the show’s success. The original concept for Jack O’Neill was a deeply troubled and inflexible soldier, still grieving the loss of his son. That much sadness would have slowed down the story. Anderson, however, brought a lighter, more playful energy to the role. This deliberate shift away from a strictly harsh military persona made O’Neill a more appealing and relatable leader, capable of cracking jokes even when facing incredibly serious threats.
Anderson was determined to make the show a team effort, rather than focusing on one main star. He’d learned from his time on MacGyver how draining it could be to carry an entire production alone. This approach allowed the show to showcase its exceptionally talented cast and build the strong, complex relationships between the characters, which ultimately became its biggest asset.
You can now watch the original Stargate SG-1 movie and all ten seasons of the show on Prime Video.
