There won’t be a new episode of Matlock season 2 tonight, April 30, 2026, due to CBS’s schedule. The recent Matlock “reboot” had a very successful launch in 2024, especially considering how many popular shows premiered that year. Led by Kathy Bates, the CBS series features a strong cast and a fresh take on the classic formula. After a successful first season, fans were eagerly awaiting its return for the 2025-2026 television season.

I was hooked after the season one finale of Matlock – it really set up the big conflict between Madeline Matlock/Kingston and Jacobson Moore! Season two was all about her keeping her secret and figuring out who her true allies were, and I was so relieved Olympia turned out to be one of them. But the end of season two was incredible! Seeing Senior and his people finally arrested for the Wellbrexa case felt like a huge win. Now I’m dying to know what happens next with the show, but we’ll all have to wait and see where the writers take the story!

Why There Is No New Matlock Season 2 Tonight (April 30, 2026)

Tonight’s lack of a new Matlock episode isn’t due to a special broadcast – season two has simply finished airing. This is typical for many TV shows, meaning it will be off the air for a few months. If you’re new to how TV seasons work, this break usually lasts throughout the summer, allowing the actors and crew to rest before filming begins for the next season in the fall.

Tonight, CBS is changing its schedule. Instead of a new episode of Matlock, they’re airing an episode of Elsbeth season 3—episode 17, “High Class Problems”—an hour earlier at 9 PM ET. The show Elsbeth‘s usual timeslot will be filled with a rerun of season 3, episode 11, “Ol’ Man Liver.” It’s unclear if CBS will continue this new schedule until the show’s finale on May 21, 2026.

When Will Matlock Season 3 Release (& What To Expect)

As a big fan of Matlock, I was happy to hear CBS has already announced its fall 2026 schedule, which gives us a heads-up on when the new season will arrive. The show got renewed way back in January – a really early renewal, actually! But there’s a catch: CBS is holding back season 3 until mid-season. That means we won’t be seeing Madeline and Olympia’s latest adventures this fall like we did last year; we’ll have to wait until at least January 2027 to find out what happens next. It’s a bit of a wait, but I’m still excited!

Now that the storyline with Wellbrexa has concluded, season 3 of Matlock will feature a brand new central mystery, according to showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman. The new season will also jump ahead in time, giving the series a fresh start instead of continuing directly after the events of season 2. When the season begins, Olympia and Madeline will definitely still be partners.
