As the TV season nears its end, networks are wrapping up current shows and deciding which ones to bring back for another year. ABC is currently doing both – finishing out the season and making those renewal decisions.

After five successful seasons, the popular comedy Abbott Elementary saw some major changes. This season included filming at a real baseball game, further connecting the show to its Philadelphia setting with appearances by local celebrities. We watched Ava and O’Shon’s relationship blossom, while Janine and Gregory faced their first big argument, briefly separating. But now, it’s time to say goodbye to season five.

Abbott Elementary Season 5 Is Officially Done

There won’t be a new episode of Abbott Elementary tonight, April 29, 2026, because the show has finished its current season. The two episodes that aired on April 22nd, “Ava & Fest” and “Miami”, served as the season finale. This means Abbott Elementary is now on break and won’t return with new episodes for a while.

Instead, ABC will be showing older episodes of Abbott Elementary during some of the weeks when its new shows aren’t airing. Since Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears finished its second season sooner than usual, ABC now has no new scripted programs scheduled for Wednesday nights. Although all episodes of Abbott Elementary can be streamed on Hulu, re-airing them during its regular time slot helps ABC reach a wider audience.

When Abbott Elementary Returns & What To Expect From it

ABC renewed Abbott Elementary for season 6 well in advance of the season finale, showing how valuable the show is to their lineup. While ABC hasn’t announced its full schedule for the 2026-2027 season yet, we don’t have a specific premiere date. Based on past seasons, though, it’s likely that season 6 will arrive sometime between mid-September and mid-October.

The season 5 finale of Abbott Elementary left viewers with a few things to look forward to. The school was saved from closure thanks to a surprising turn of events, ensuring it will remain open – though some staff changes, including potential cuts, are likely. On a personal note, after recently reconciling, Gregory has been thinking about proposing marriage, leaving his future with his partner uncertain.
