Wicked Recap: 5 Biggest Things To Remember Before Watching Wicked: For Good

2025 is looking like a fantastic year for movies! Superhero fans have loved the new Fantastic Four: First Steps from Marvel and Superman from DC. Horror films are also doing incredibly well, with Weapons and Sinners being major box office hits. Even though summer is over, the excitement isn’t stopping. Predator: Badlands is currently smashing records, and everyone is eagerly anticipating James Cameron’s next Avatar movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash. But before the buzz builds around the blue Na’vi, a green character is set to make a big splash.

With Thanksgiving approaching, Universal Pictures is releasing the long-awaited sequel, Wicked: For Good. The film continues the story of the battle between the Wizard and the Wicked Witch of the West, picking up immediately where the first movie left off. If you don’t have time to rewatch the original amidst the holiday rush, here are five key things to remember before seeing Wicked: For Good.

5) Elphaba Used to Believe in the Wizard

Elphaba faces hardship because her green skin makes her a target for bullying in Oz. She holds onto the hope that the Wizard will help her and others who are different.

In the musical Wicked, Elphaba achieves her lifelong dream when she and her sister, Nessarose, attend Shiz University, where she demonstrates her magical abilities. However, she soon discovers that the Wizard isn’t who everyone believes him to be—he’s a fraud responsible for the disappearance of many animals. Though shocked, Elphaba accepts this truth and turns her back on the Wizard and anyone supporting his schemes.

4) Elphaba and Glinda Aren’t on Bad Terms

The musical Wicked starts with a scene showing Glinda as the Good Witch, apparently working for the Wizard. However, this initial moment is misleading; Glinda isn’t simply obeying the Wizard’s orders without thinking for herself.

When Elphaba goes to see the Wizard, Glinda accompanies her and is shocked by what she discovers he’s doing. Glinda understands that if they both run away, it won’t solve anything. She decides to stay and help Elphaba in any way she can from a distance.

3) Fiyero Is Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

While attending Shiz University, Glinda and Elphaba become friends and start to interact more with other students, like Fiyero. Fiyero is a bit of a rule-breaker, and he and Elphaba bond over this shared trait. However, they have trouble forming a deeper connection because Fiyero seems unsure of his own goals.

By the end of Wicked, Fiyero finally understands everything clearly. When the Wizard and his followers begin spreading false rumors about Elphaba, Fiyero leaves Shiz on horseback, determined to find her before anyone else does. Wicked: For Good will likely show us even more of Fiyero’s story and what he truly feels for Elphaba.

2) Dorthy Isn’t Around Yet

The movie Wicked is a fresh take on the beloved story of The Wizard of Oz, about a girl named Dorothy who finds herself in a magical land after her house is swept away by a tornado. While the 2024 film gives us glimpses of many characters Dorothy will meet, Dorothy herself appears only briefly.

Don’t worry about the original story! Most of Wicked happens before Dorothy lands in Oz. The sequel will definitely deal with the events of her house falling on the Wicked Witch of the East and her connection with the Wizard.

1) The Wicked Witch of the West Is Going to Die

Though it tells a story leading up to The Wizard of Oz, Wicked actually begins at the very end – with Glinda welcoming the people of Munchkinland after the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, who is known as Elphaba. Just like in The Wizard of Oz, where Dorothy defeats the Witch with water, Wicked: For Good appears to be starting with that same event.

It’s important to note that Wicked isn’t a simple retelling of The Wizard of Oz. By showing Elphaba’s death early on, the story suggests there’s a deeper, more complex tragedy at play. We’ll likely find out all the details when Wicked: For Good hits theaters.

Wicked: For Good hits theaters on November 21, 2025.
