With so many streaming services releasing new shows and reviving old favorites every week, it’s hard for anything to really stand out. And even when something does get noticed, it often struggles to live up to expectations. But Apple TV+’s new series, Widow’s Bay, is a rare success story. Starring Matthew Rhys, the horror comedy has quickly gained popularity and critical acclaim, currently holding a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to its skillful blend of humor and genuine scares.
Despite a quiet start alongside other popular shows on Apple TV+, Widow’s Bay has gained a strong following. Now, with only one episode remaining in its first season, Apple TV+ has announced the show will return for a second season. Creator and showrunner Katie Dippold hinted at what’s to come, playfully suggesting that season two will reveal everything is peaceful and perfect on the island.
Widow’s Bay Renewed for Season 2 (And We Can’t Wait)

Apple TV+ has renewed Widow’s Bay for a second season and also signed its creator, Dippold, to a new multi-year deal. This is exciting news for fans, as it ensures she’ll continue developing projects for the platform in the years to come.
Something mysterious is hidden in the town of Widow’s Bay. The series centers on Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) and his efforts to revitalize his Massachusetts island community, attracting both residents and visitors. However, Widow’s Bay has a troubled past – a history that draws tourists in but also leads to strange disappearances and unsettling ghostly sightings.
What’s great about the TV series Widow’s Bay is its ability to be both hilarious and genuinely creepy, often switching between the two unexpectedly. The show cleverly subverts common horror clichés, poking fun at typical haunted hotel tropes while also delivering unpredictable episodes, like a standout slasher film. With elements like sea hags and a flashback set in the past, Widow’s Bay has quickly become a must-watch for horror fans.
Rhys is fantastic in Widow’s Bay, but the show truly shines thanks to its entire cast, including Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey, who all bring lively performances.
The series boasts talented directors, including Emmy winner Hiro Murai, who directed half of the episodes. Other key directors like Ti West (known for The Innkeepers and X), Sam Donovan (Severance), and Andrew DeYoung (Friendship, The Chair Company) also contributed. They’ve skillfully blended their experience in horror and comedy, resulting in a truly exceptional show that stands out as one of the year’s best.
I’m absolutely obsessed with Widow’s Bay! From the very beginning, the show has just grabbed me with its creepy mysteries, surprising humor, and all those hidden secrets. Katie, Hiro, Matthew, and everyone involved have created something truly special. It’s become the show everyone is talking about, and I’m so glad Apple TV feels the same way – I can’t wait for another season!
The first season of Widow’s Bay will conclude next Wednesday, June 17th, with the release of its final episode on Apple TV.
