Will Ferrell has become an international streaming sensation.
A remake of a beloved science fiction series by the comedian has unexpectedly become a hit on streaming services. Will Ferrell is known for many popular comedies from the 2000s and beyond, including the funny and touching Elf and the action-comedy The Other Guys, which also starred Mark Wahlberg.
Will Ferrell hasn’t always been in critically acclaimed films. For example, the 2009 movie Land of the Lost, a comedic sci-fi adventure inspired by a 1970s TV show, didn’t receive great reviews. In it, he plays Dr. Rick Marshall, who gets transported with a group of others to a strange, prehistoric world.
Despite being released in theaters 17 years ago, Land of the Lost is now a big hit on HBO Max. As of February 12, 2026, data from FlixPatrol shows the movie is currently ranked #3 globally on the platform. It’s even the #1 movie in nine countries: Belize, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Paraguay, El Salvador, and Uruguay.

You can stream Land of the Lost on HBO Max in the US, though it hasn’t cracked the Top 10 most popular titles yet. This could be due to the film’s poor reception when it first came out. Reviews were very negative, with critics finding its humor too mature and the story uninteresting.
The movie wasn’t popular with viewers either. Rotten Tomatoes shows it received a 32% audience score from over 250,000 ratings, only slightly better than the 27% score from critics based on 189 reviews. Financially, the movie also failed, earning only $68.8 million worldwide despite costing $100 million to make.
As a big movie fan, I’ve been noticing a surprising resurgence of Land of the Lost. I think the combination of dinosaurs and Will Ferrell’s comedy style really hit a sweet spot with audiences when it first came out, explaining its initial success. It’s often called one of Ferrell’s weakest films, but honestly, the basic idea – being lost in a prehistoric world – seems to be what’s drawing people back to it on streaming now. It’s just a fun premise, even if the execution wasn’t perfect!
It’s unclear how popular this show will become in the long run. Although Will Ferrell is a well-known actor, Land of the Lost has generally received negative reviews from both viewers and critics. If the film does well on streaming platforms, it might be re-evaluated by audiences later on.
