Bethesda has been quiet about updating their classic titles – aside from Skyrim – but the success of Fallout’s second season could mean that’s about to shift.
With Fallout 4 now enhanced for next-generation consoles and rumors of a remastered Fallout: New Vegas circulating, fans are wondering if Fallout 3 will receive a similar update.
Let’s talk about a possible remake of Fallout 3, and when we might see it. It’s likely to happen before a new Fallout 5 game.
Will there be a Fallout 3 Remastered?
No official Fallout 3 remaster has been announced by Bethesda, at the time of writing.
In September 2023, documents from Microsoft were leaked online (as reported by IGN) during the legal proceedings surrounding their attempt to buy Activision Blizzard.
So, the FTC just dropped a bunch of documents, and as a gamer, I immediately started digging! It looks like Bethesda is working on a remastered version of Fallout 3. This has everyone, including me, thinking an official announcement could be coming any day now. It’s super exciting!
Rumors started gaining traction in late 2025 when Todd Howard from Bethesda mentioned they were working on Fallout 76, as well as other projects. Reports later suggested that one of those projects was a remastered version of Fallout 3.
According to Xbox insider Jez Corden, reporting for Windows Central in January 2026, a remake of Fallout 3 is in development. It’s expected to be similar in style to the remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and this is considered very promising news for fans.

When could a potential Fallout 3 Remastered release date be? Our speculation
Honestly, we’re totally in the dark about a Fallout 3 remaster right now. Because of that, there’s no way to even guess when it might actually come out. It’s just all speculation at this point.
Documents released during Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard suggest a remastered version of Fallout 3 was planned for release sometime in 2024.
Things didn’t work out as planned, but recent leaks about development suggest that work is still moving forward.
Although a release in 2026 is possible, we currently expect the remastered version of Fallout 3 to come out in 2027.
That being said, this is purely speculation, so take that with a rather large grain of salt.
Is there a fan-made Fallout 3 remaster? How to get it explained
Fan-made mods to improve Fallout 3’s graphics and gameplay do exist. Nexus Mods is the best website to find and download these creations.
Many aspects of the game haven’t been changed since its release in 2008, so they feel a little old now.
A mod by WMDBloodHunter that completely revamps the game’s environments – including the main game, all DLC, and previously unused content – received its latest update in 2023. Be sure to check if your computer meets the necessary specifications before installing.
