MachineGames hasn’t revealed what they’re working on next, but they’ve previously said they plan to revisit the Wolfenstein series. In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, studio director Jerk Gustafsson confirmed that they will eventually create a sequel to Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus.
He stated that the team always planned to return to the Wolfenstein series and complete the story arc begun in previous games. While he wouldn’t reveal any specifics about when they might continue the narrative – whether it’s soon or in the future – he confirmed they haven’t finished with the Wolfenstein universe.
Regarding the new Indiana Jones and the Great Circle game, Gustafsson discussed the studio’s history with narrative-driven, first-person adventures. He also emphasized their desire to keep pushing boundaries while remaining true to what makes their games special.
For a long time, we’ve been making games that are very similar – first-person adventures with a strong focus on storytelling. Now, we’re eager to explore new ideas and expand what’s possible within that genre. One possibility we’ve considered is a mobile game, but it would require a different set of skills than we currently have at MachineGames. It might happen eventually, but there are no concrete plans at this time.
Gustafsson hopes there will continue to be an audience for the types of games MachineGames creates, as the team genuinely enjoys making them. He also noted a concerning trend – he’s seeing fewer of these large-scale, high-budget games, often referred to as ‘AAA’ titles.
According to a report from January, MachineGames is currently developing a new Wolfenstein game. Jez Corden of Windows Central reported this is happening alongside Amazon’s work on a Wolfenstein TV series. The studio is also believed to be creating a multiplayer game, potentially like Rainbow Six Siege. This suggests it could be a team-based hero shooter where players alternate between attacking and defending.
Last September, Gustafsson mentioned he’d like to return to the Wolfenstein series, saying there are more stories to explore within that world.
From the beginning, even when we were first planning New Order at id, we had a general idea of where B.J.’s story would go – what would happen in the second and third games. I want to emphasize that because we definitely aren’t finished with Wolfenstein yet; we still have more story to tell, he explained.
Following Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, two additional games were released: Wolfenstein: Youngblood, which is best played with a friend, and the virtual reality experience, Wolfenstein Cyberpilot. You can find our detailed reviews of all three Wolfenstein games. We also have reviews available for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and its expansion if you’re interested.
