Woochie the Wayfarer Developers Describe Challenges of Making a Game in the Joseon Era

A few days following the initial reveal of the action-adventure game “Woochie the Wayfarer,” developers LoreVault and publishers Nexon Games have shared additional information about the title via a new video. This video offers insights through an interview between game director Kang Dong Yeon and art director Mok Youngmi, which you can view below.

The duo discusses not just Woochie the Wayfarer, but also the creative studio behind it in great depth. For example, Youngmi describes the game’s main environment as a “Joseon-inspired fantasy.” To provide more clarity, the art director explains that it’s a realm rooted in historical facts, infused with imaginative and magical aspects to enhance gameplay experience. Given the game’s backdrop, players will encounter characters from Korean folklore such as Dokkaebi, Gumiho, and even those reminiscent of period drama characters.

When talking about the difficulties of creating a game set in Korea’s Joseon dynasty, Youngmi mentions that there are also some benefits, such as an abundance of detailed resources available on different elements of the era, like culture, clothing styles, and even culinary traditions.

Youngmi points out that the difficulty lies in striking an appropriate blend of truth and imagination,” she says. “Since the Joseon era was a historical period, it’s crucial to maintain accuracy and responsibility. However, we need creativity and ingenuity for the gameplay aspect. As a result, we often debate what aspects to present factually and which to reimagine. When dealing with mythical creatures from folklore, references can be limited or absent entirely. This makes designing them challenging, but also thrilling-it gives us an opportunity to breathe life into these creatures based on our unique interpretations.

In simpler terms, Yeon characterizes “Woochie the Wayfarer” as a solo player game with a significant emphasis on battle scenes, but the narrative is designed to be an impactful emotional ride. The game employs diverse techniques for storytelling.

Youngmi explains that the character of Woochi in the game has various traditional interpretations, allowing for a wide range of creative adaptations. Instead of simply following the original character, they aim to preserve his existing appeal while incorporating their unique perspective, resulting in something different from movies or television dramas. By combining traditional Korean elements such as gat, hanbok, and dorongi with fantasy aspects, they are developing a distinct, original version of Woochi.

In contrast to initial impressions suggested by the reveal trailer, Woochie the Wayfarer isn’t primarily designed as a dark game, according to Youngmi from the studio. Instead, the game is expected to be vibrant and colorful, with an inviting tone that sets it apart from other East Asian fantasy games in terms of atmosphere and storyline.

In addition to the interview, there’s also a brief sneak peek at gameplay, which perfectly encapsulates the cozy and welcoming environment that Youngmi refers to. The clip shows Woochie strolling through a meadow towards a big tree, surrounded by an array of flowers. Regrettably, the clip doesn’t provide any extended gameplay footage.
