A popular Xbox game was briefly available for free due to a technical mistake. Many players were excited, but quickly discovered they couldn’t actually play it because of the glitch. Now, the game’s developer is officially releasing the game to everyone as a proper, playable giveaway to make up for the earlier issue.
Today, inXile Entertainment addressed the recent issue of accidentally offering the game Wasteland Remastered for free. Originally released in 2020, this updated version of the 1988 classic Wasteland came out just before Wasteland 3. Despite being almost 40 years old, the remaster significantly modernized the game and made it much easier to play.
Here’s what happened with Wasteland Remastered: it was briefly offered as a free download due to a mistake on the Xbox Store. Unfortunately, those who downloaded it during that time didn’t actually own the game and couldn’t play it. To fix this, inXile entertainment is now giving out free copies to everyone who originally downloaded it. While people who didn’t get the game when it was free won’t be able to now, those affected by the error will receive a working copy.
Here’s how the free game giveaway will work: Your current copy of Wasteland Remastered will disappear from your Xbox library. Then, a new copy will appear in the “Offers & Credits” section of your Xbox profile. Once you claim it there, you’ll be able to download and play the game again.
It’s been a bit of a mix-up, but it’s good that inXile and Xbox are keeping their promise and letting people keep Wasteland Remastered, even though it was given away by mistake. If you were quick, you might have even gotten it for free when it was briefly available!
