Xbox Game Pass Now Has One of the Great Classic Square Enix RPGs

Microsoft has added a classic Square Enix game from the Super Nintendo era to its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass subscriptions. Originally released in 1991, the game was initially exclusive to the SNES and didn’t come to PlayStation 1 until 1997 (Japan) and 2001 (Western markets). It wasn’t available on Xbox consoles at all until now, in 2024. While it’s currently included with Game Pass, the duration of its availability hasn’t been announced.

For a limited time, Xbox Game Pass subscribers on PC and Xbox Series X|S can play Final Fantasy IV, a classic RPG from Square Enix originally released in 1991. It’s the fourth installment in the popular Final Fantasy series, which began in 1987, and is considered one of the stronger titles in the franchise and a solid RPG from the Super Nintendo era. While not among the very best RPGs of its time, it received a positive 89% score on GameRankings when it first came out.

Remaster Not the Original

This isn’t the classic SNES version – it’s the Pixel Remaster. That means it features updated 2D graphics and completely new music. The gameplay has also been improved with a more modern interface and the ability to enable auto-battle.

Compared to today’s RPGs, including newer Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy IV is a relatively short game. Players typically finish it in around 20 to 25 hours.

We’re not sure how long this popular RPG will stay on Xbox Game Pass, but games are usually added for either 12 or 24 months. While it’s available through the subscription service, Game Pass members can get 20% off the $17.99 price, saving a little money. This discount is only for Game Pass subscribers.
