A new game released on Xbox Game Pass is getting mixed reactions from players. While available to subscribers on both Xbox and PC starting April 23rd, it doesn’t seem to be attracting a large audience, and opinions are sharply divided. Some players are enjoying the game, while others find it disappointing – a surprising outcome considering the developer’s history of creating classic titles.
The newest game added to Xbox Game Pass is Kiln, a multiplayer pottery-themed fighting game from Double Fine Productions. Double Fine was founded in 2000 by Tim Schafer, who previously worked at LucasArts. The studio is known for beloved games like Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, and Psychonauts 2. Schafer himself is famous for creating classic adventure games like Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, and The Secret of Monkey Island during his time at LucasArts. While it’s unclear how involved Schafer was with Kiln, it doesn’t quite reach the quality of his previous work or the studio’s best titles.
Not Xbox’s Best Game
The game Kiln currently has limited reviews. Metacritic shows a mixed reception with scores of 50 and 70 out of 100. User reviews are also somewhat lukewarm – it has a 70% approval rating on Steam and a 3 out of 5 on the Xbox Store. The PlayStation Store is the only platform where it’s received particularly positive feedback, with PS5 players giving it an average score of 4.57 out of 5. Despite being published by Xbox Game Studios, Kiln is available on multiple platforms.
The game is causing a split among Xbox Game Pass subscribers, as discussions on the service’s Reddit page show. A recent post encourages people to give the new release a chance, but opinions are evenly divided. Roughly half agree it’s worth playing, while the other half recommend skipping it. This seems to be reflected in the game’s performance on Steam, where player numbers are low and there aren’t many user reviews, suggesting most aren’t even giving it a try – or even aware of its existence, judging by the limited views on its trailers.
Seriously, you guys need to check out Kiln! I saw a post about it, and it’s totally right – this game is awesome. The world is really charming, and it’s just a blast running around and battling as pots. We need more games like this on Xbox that the whole family can enjoy, and Double Fine really knocked it out of the park with this one, at least from what I’ve played so far.
One commenter said the game isn’t worth playing right away, noting it has good intentions but isn’t enjoyable overall.
Look, everyone has their own opinion, but it’s pretty clear this new Xbox Game Pass game isn’t exactly a hit. Honestly, most people aren’t even playing it, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. The reaction has been really mixed, and frankly, there just isn’t much buzz about it at all.
