Xbox has just shared significant new details about its next console, currently called Project Helix. While the console was revealed last week, very little was known about its technical specs. Xbox did confirm it will be able to play games from both PC and Xbox, building on Microsoft’s existing plans. Now, following that initial announcement, Xbox is giving us a better look at what Project Helix can do.
At GDC today, Xbox VP Jason Ronald shared more details about Project Helix. He explained that the new platform will significantly improve ray tracing performance. While specific details weren’t fully revealed, it will include advanced neural rendering and upscaling technology, and will be powered by AMD technology.
Ronald explained that Project Helix will build on Xbox’s existing strengths. He specifically highlighted the importance of backward compatibility – making sure older games still work, and even play better than before. Xbox’s Play Anywhere feature will also be even more central to the experience, as will their commitment to handheld gaming, as demonstrated by devices like the ROG Xbox Ally.
Xbox Project Helix Release Window Seemingly Teased

The most exciting news from Ronald’s presentation was that developers will start receiving early versions of Project Helix in 2027. This likely means the console will be available to the public sometime next year. Considering developers didn’t get early versions of the Xbox Series X and S until early 2020, a similar timeline for Helix suggests the console could launch near the end of 2027, potentially around the holiday season.
We still have many questions about the next Xbox, currently known as Project Helix. Xbox hasn’t announced the official console name or given any indication of its price. We’ll share those details with you on ComicBook as soon as they’re released.
