
Microsoft’s physical release of The Outer Worlds 2, launching October 29, 2025, contains surprisingly little data – just 1.32GB on the PS5 disc. This is a new low for the amount of data included on physical game releases from Microsoft.
According to Does It Play?, a physical copy of the PS5 game only contains 1.32GB of data – the initial version 1.0. To actually play the game, you’ll need to download a large 71.6GB update (patch 1.002).
You can play the game offline after it’s been updated, but you need an internet connection for that first update. Otherwise, the game won’t start.
Over the past year, Microsoft-published games have consistently had issues with their physical releases. Most boxed copies require significant downloads before you can actually play them. Recent examples include Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and now, The Outer Worlds 2.
The Outer Worlds 2 comes out on PlayStation 5 on October 29th. If you purchase the Premium Edition, you can start playing four days earlier this week. While the standard PS5 game got a price cut before launch, the Premium Edition remains at £89.99 / $99.99.
