Xbox Surprises PS5 Users With Free Game

Xbox has announced that a game initially exclusive to PlayStation 4 in 2017 will receive a free upgrade for PlayStation 5 (PS5) users this summer. Initially, this game was only available on the PS4 console and PC. However, after its initial release, it became accessible on the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and finally, four years later, it will be playable on the PS5.

The game being discussed is Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and it will also be available for PlayStation 5 on August 12, coinciding with the release of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II on PS5. The PS5 version of the original game will come as part of the pricier $70 Deluxe Edition of Hellblade II on PS5, and it will also serve as a free upgrade for those who already own the PS4 version of this narrative-focused action-adventure title.

Initially, Hellblade was launched in 2017 while Ninja Theory, its creator, was an independent studio. Later, Xbox took over Ninja Theory, which led to them publishing the sequel. Originally, Xbox didn’t publish the first game, but when they acquired Ninja Theory, they also gained the rights to publish it. In essence, this means that Xbox is providing a complimentary upgrade for PS5 users who already own the game on their PS4 systems.

As a devoted gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the creators behind Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry have unveiled an epic tale. This game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, as described on the PlayStation Store, follows a Celtic warrior’s harrowing journey through myth and madness in the Viking era.

For those less familiar, this game takes place during the Viking age, where our protagonist, a shattered warrior, embarks on a haunting vision quest into the Viking version of Hell, all for the salvation of her deceased lover’s soul. In a unique collaboration with neuroscientists and individuals who have experienced psychosis, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice aims to immerse you in the depths of Senua’s mournful rage.

Currently, it’s undetermined exactly how Xbox and Ninja Theory will provide this free update for PS5 users at the time of release. However, it seems likely that they will do so through a game patch, as this is often the method used for such upgrades. In the meantime, the upgrade is anticipated to offer enhanced graphics and novel features not shown in the video above, which is the PS4 version of the game.

The upcoming iteration of Hellblade isn’t confirmed to leverage the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 Pro yet, meaning it may not provide any improvements or additional features. However, since Xbox has boosted their consoles in the past, there’s a chance that Sony might follow suit.
