Following Microsoft’s announcement of a partnership with Discord to integrate Game Pass benefits into Discord’s Nitro subscription, details of a new feature called Project Saluki have emerged. According to Jez Corden of Windows Central, Project Saluki is specifically aimed at the Chinese market and will offer different levels of Game Pass with varying benefits. This separate version of the subscription service is necessary because Microsoft must comply with China’s specific regulations.
Although specifics about Project Saluki remain unknown, analyst Corden suggests it could include games officially approved for release in China through its subscription service. The service is also likely to feature more games with in-game purchases and other microtransactions, following the trends of successful games in that region.
Xbox is reportedly developing a new feature called Positron. Although specifics are limited, it appears Microsoft might be planning to let players convert their physical game copies into digital versions. This could be part of a broader effort by Xbox to eventually focus entirely on digital game sales. Currently, the Xbox Series S is their only console without a disc drive, while the more powerful Xbox Series X still supports physical games.
Microsoft’s potential move to a fully digital Xbox may be linked to costs. Because Microsoft isn’t part of the Blu-Ray group, they have to pay a fee to use Blu-Ray technology in their consoles. Sony, as a member of the group, can include Blu-Ray players without these extra costs.
Microsoft’s increasing focus on digital-only games likely stems from its promotion of Game Pass as a key service. Recent reports suggest their next console, Project Helix, might not include disc drives at all, fully embracing digital distribution. This aligns with the trend in PC gaming, where disc drives have largely disappeared over the last ten years with the popularity of platforms like Steam, and even many new computer cases don’t accommodate them.
I was reading about what Xbox is planning for Game Pass, and it sounds really cool! Apparently, they’re thinking about letting us customize our subscriptions. So, if I don’t use things like Minecraft Realms or Fortnite Crew, I wouldn’t have to pay for them as part of my Game Pass. It’s like building my own plan! They’re even considering bundling other services in, like maybe including time with World of Warcraft. That would be awesome, right? It feels like they’re really listening to what gamers want.
There’s talk of a new Game Pass option that would focus solely on games made by Xbox Game Studios. According to data discovered within the Game Pass system, this tier could include popular titles like DOOM Eternal and Grounded, as well as a variety of other first-party games.
