Wow, can you believe the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series is 20 years old already? It’s amazing! The team at RGG Studio just released a really sweet video to mark the occasion, and it honestly made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
This video follows a man’s journey over the last two decades, showing his transformation from a struggling college student to a stressed professional.
It might not seem like a happy occasion, but whenever he faces a major challenge, he remembers advice from Kazuma Kiryu, which gives him the courage to keep going. By the end, he’s even started to grow a beard just like Kaz’.
It’s surprising to think how long this series has existed, but it’s only become truly popular in Western countries over the past ten years.
While many discovered the Yakuza series with Yakuza 0 (released internationally in 2017), the franchise actually began on the PlayStation 2. The original Yakuza game first came out on December 8th, 2005, and has seen Kiryu fighting crime ever since.
The Yakuza series has evolved significantly, and today marks a big step with the release of three classic games on PlayStation 5: Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2. Fans can now enjoy these titles on the latest hardware, with Yakuza Kiwami 3 scheduled to follow on February 12, 2026.
